There is frequently a red "X" on the Synaptics Touchpad Taskbar icon.  The cursor also frquently jumps down about 1/2" for no apparent reason.  Any ideas why?

Greetings @FBOL

Thanks for the post.

I understand that you see an X mark on the Synaptics touchpad icon, is that right?

Not to worry, I will be glad to assist you.

May I know the exact product number of your computer? Click here. Please do not share the serial number of your computer.

Have you tried any troubleshooting steps on your own?

Have you run a diagnostics on your computer?

Have you tried to update all the drivers using HP Support Assistant?

Recommend you run HP Support Assistant on your computer to update all the drivers on your computer.

Refer to this HP Article for assistance in using HPSA to update the drivers.

Once all the drivers are updated, especially BIOS and chipset, shut down your computer.

Wait for a minute.

Turn the computer On and keep tapping F2 repeatedly on startup to enter system diagnostics. Click here

Once the computer is in system diagnostics, select the component test and run a test on the touchpad.

If the touchpad test fails, please contact our phone support team to check on the service options available for your computer.

If the test passes, restart your computer.

Open programs and features by doing a right-click on the Windows button. (some versions might have apps and features.)

Uninstall Synaptics from your computer.

Restart your computer and run HP Support Assistant to install it back on your computer. Click here.

If HPSA is unable to find the driver for your computer, please visit www.hp.com/drivers and enter the product number of your computer.

Download and install Synaptics back on your computer and check.

Let me know how it goes. Good Luck.
