When I right click on the mouse pad, nothing happens. I have to touch the screen to get something to work, which takes a lot longer and is not my preference. I don't want to disable the touch function though (if that is even an option.) The left click on the mouse works fine. I don't know what setting to change and if this is an HP or Windows issue. I just got this computer so as far as I know, it's not something that changed with an update. Thanks

Here's my update and the actual solution. I returned the first computer and got the second computer and had all the same issues. No HP Zone on the control panel, couldn't find the spot to do the drag and drop test for the right so it failed the first diagnostics. I thought that maybe this particular computer just wouldn't do a right click with a drop down menu but had a hard time believing that since I didn't see any complaints about this particular issue anywhere else. So I kept trying on the touchpad and finally found a spot on the bottom DIRECTLY BELOW the M and < keys that has to be pressed (not tapped) to get the pop up drop down to work. With enough practice, I can get it more than once but it definitely isn't an easy spot to find and really rather stupid to be set up that way. That said, I re-did the drag and drop test and passed. My first laptop was probably fine as it has all the same issues as this one. I suggest HP does a better explanation of where this spot is on the touchpad, perhaps even marking it, because while I may not be a genius, I don't think I am inept at using a computer and it clearly took me forever to find it. Thanks for the help.

@Boyzmom I recommend you switch the mouse/touchpad buttons and check if this is either a hardware or a software malfunction (alternatively, you can also check with an alternate/external mouse)
Here are the steps to switch Left and Right Mouse Button Functions from Settings App
- Press the Windows + I key combination to open the Settings app, and click Devices.
- Choose the Mouse tab on the left side. On the right side, you can select Left or Right from the “Select your primary button” drop-down list.
- When finished, close the Settings app. This change will take effect immediately.
Let me know how that pans out,

I changed the setting to right from left and closed settings. Nothing changed. The left still worked, even though it was set to right. The right side did nothing. So, I just changed it back to left. I don't have an external mouse to try with. I should have been more specific in my question post. If I am in excel, for example, and right click, the cell will be selected but I don't get the drop down menu that I typically get when clicking right. If I am in google and right click on the webpage address, I can get it to highlight but the dropdown menu doesn't show up to do copy, paste, etc. I just don't know if this is a setting somewhere or just doesn't do this b/c it is a touchscreen also. Thanks

@Boyzmom Thank you for the clarification, as I had been trying to identify if the right-click button is functional and if the button is working as a left-click when you switched over using the steps suggested, that confirms the physical buttons are okay, it's only an issue with the settings.
If the issue is limited to using the Microsoft Excel (2013 version, if it isn't this, let me know which one you have), try the below steps:
- Open the VBA editor (alt+F11), press control+g. Type this text:
- Application.CommandBars("Cell").Reset
- At the end of that line, press enter.
- If that does not help, repeat the above with:
- Application.CommandBars("Cell").enabled=true
If the above doesn't help, please create a new administrator account and check if that works.
I hope that answers your query,

The issue isn't limited to excel. It is anywhere I right click and expect to get a drop down menu. If I am on the internet and right click on the mouse pad, nothing happens. I don't have the left and right buttons below the pad as I do on my other computer, so I assume clicking on the right side of the pad is equivalent to the right click button. I borrowed an external mouse and when I use that and right click the drop down menu appears. So, this leads me to think it is something basic in how I am supposed to use the pad or some setting for the HP computer because it is a touchscreen also. For what it's worth - I disabled the human interface device in device manager for the touch screen and it still didn't work, so I enabled it again. The laptop is running Windows Home 10 Version 1809, if that matters. Seems like it is either a HP settings or Windows issue? Thank you.

@Boyzmom Could you send a picture of the touchpad you have, so I can understand exactly what you have and to confirm the external mouse works fine (both left and right-click works) whereas the right button on the touchpad doesn't work on any program, is that right?

This is the laptop I have, so any of these pictures will show the touchpad. Basically, if I click on the left or the right side of the pad I get the same result. That's also what happened when I switched from left to right in the settings after your first reply. It's as if there is just one choice and no ability to get drop down menu in anything by right clicking. I assumed if I clicked on the right side, it would be like the right mouse. By click, I mean tap or double tap.

@Boyzmom that's a control zone touchpad, I suggest you follow the below steps to disable the function and check if it works:
You could try changing the way the control zone touchpad works, using the below steps:
- On the Start screen, type control panel, then click Control Panel from the list of results.
- Click the View by drop-down menu, and select large icons.
- Click HP Control Zone.
- Remove the check mark next to Enable Edge Swipes, then click OK.
The left and right control zones now accept right-click and left-click actions.

@Boyzmom Since that's not visible, I suggest you update the BIOS and Chipset drivers using the HP website: Click here for details, if that doesn't work, while the external mouse continues to work, I suggest running an interactive hardware test on the touchpad using the below steps:
Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
On the main menu, click Component Tests.
The Component Tests menu displays.
Your Component Tests menu might be different, depending on the components installed on your computer.
Mouse/Touchpad Tests - This consists of two tests, the Pointer Test and the Drag and Drop Test.
To run the tests, click Mouse/Touchpad. Select the test you want to run, and then click Run once. Follow the instructions to complete the test.
Let me know how that pans out.
