So, your "click here for details" didn't have anything to click so I went to the support.hp.com/drivers and updated one of the two BIOS updates - do I do both of them? I did Version F.14 Rev A but there is a second one F.07 REv A? Also, for the Chipset drivers, which ones do I install? There are mutiple drivers for Windows 1809? Do I do every one?

@Boyzmom I've updated the link, seem to have been an error while I attached the hyperlink, that said, please update the latest version of every driver listed on the HP website and let me know if that helps, if not, perform the test and get back to me with the results.
Good luck.

Please clairfy a few things since I have no idea.
When you say update the latest version of every driver, are we now talking about everything that is listed including keypad, mouse, input, etc? Do I do the second BIOS update or just the first since it has a more recent date? On the Chipset drivers, which ones do I do Whiskey lake, kaby lake, whiskey/coffee for my version of Windows? using the hp site to detect my laptop it is showing me all these as options so I don't know if that means do every single thing that comes up or not? Thanks

Updating the two drivers didn't change anything. I had to first update the diagnostics file before I could do the test (shocker.) Remember in elementary school when they taught you how to give instructions on how to make a peanut butter sandwich and everyone forgot to say unscrew the lid before you stick the knife in the jar? Anyway, I wasn't sure if I was supposed to do the test with just the pad or the external mouse, but since you mentioned the external mouse I did both. Basically, when the pad didn't work I used the external mouse. I still managed to fail the drag and drop test but passed the pointer test. I haven't submitted my results yet, but I assume this is what I was supposed to do? As an aside, does it matter that my computer says I have an ELAN touchpad and you said I have a control zone touchpad?

@Boyzmom I know exactly what you mean, been there done that, I'm glad we opened the "jar" successfully either way 😉 that said, the control zone is a feature in certain HP notebooks whereas the Elan touchpad is a driver, they are two different things, I'm glad you've brought that up though, and the fact that the mouse worked on the test screen but the touchpad did not, confirms a hardware malfunction, you may want to click test failed, capture the failure ID and talk to the HP Support to have the device repaired/replaced:
follow the below steps to get started:
1) Click on this link - www.hp.com/contacthp/
2) Click on "Continue as guest".
3) Enter the serial of your device.
4) Select the country from the drop-down.
5) Click on "Show Options".
Fill the web-form, to populate a case number and phone number for yourself!
Also, if you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty, is yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from,

I just got this thing like two weeks ago; it's brand new. So, at some point should I have seen the HP Control Zone show up somewhere? How can this be brand new and not have the correct driver? I'll submit the failure. I assume i don't need to do it a second time with just the pad and not the external mouse? Thanks
04-17-2019 05:44 PM
@Boyzmom That's an interactive test and if the right-click isn't working, you'll need to click on test failed using the left-click, and no, you don't have to do it again, since you've already done it, that said, this isn't a driver issue anymore, considering the test failed, it's a hardware issue, and also, to answer your question or to clarify, the control zone (for your reference: Click here to know how it looks and works) doesn't seem to be on your computer, as I mentioned earlier, that's a feature that is on certain HP laptops and yours doesn't seem to be one of them, I wouldn't know until its tested, hence I suggested the steps to test and it turns out your model doesn't have it.
For now, the best thing to do is to write down the failure ID from the test and talk to HP on getting the device repaired or since its only 2 weeks old, you may be able to get a brand new laptop as a replacement.
If my efforts to help you understand the situation and guide you towards the solution to repair//replace the device, please select the "Accept as Solution".button to help others looking for a solution to similar issues.

Here's my update and the actual solution. I returned the first computer and got the second computer and had all the same issues. No HP Zone on the control panel, couldn't find the spot to do the drag and drop test for the right so it failed the first diagnostics. I thought that maybe this particular computer just wouldn't do a right click with a drop down menu but had a hard time believing that since I didn't see any complaints about this particular issue anywhere else. So I kept trying on the touchpad and finally found a spot on the bottom DIRECTLY BELOW the M and < keys that has to be pressed (not tapped) to get the pop up drop down to work. With enough practice, I can get it more than once but it definitely isn't an easy spot to find and really rather stupid to be set up that way. That said, I re-did the drag and drop test and passed. My first laptop was probably fine as it has all the same issues as this one. I suggest HP does a better explanation of where this spot is on the touchpad, perhaps even marking it, because while I may not be a genius, I don't think I am inept at using a computer and it clearly took me forever to find it. Thanks for the help.

@Boyzmom I'm glad you found the key that resolves the issue, considering the conversation we've been in, I'd say a screenshot of your keyboard (model specific) would be helpful in understanding exactly which key you are referring to, that said, I'll be more than happy to forward your suggestion to the concerned (R&D) Team to have this implemented in the near future.
I appreciate your patience and your time, take care and have a good day.
