HP Envy 17.3 inch Laptop PC 17-cw0000 (761Y9AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

My work laptop is a Firefly and doesn't have this problem. To describe my configuration I have the Envy laptop for personal use on a shelf under my desk with three monitors connected to the dock. The lid remains closed most of the time. I rarely use it as an actual laptop because the battery life just sucks.  But to stay on track, if the machine is completely shutdown it remembers that it is connected to the dock and the three monitors. It will boot up and use the displays accordingly. However - if I restart the machine it forgets, I get no display on any of the monitors and have to pull the laptop out, open the lid and reset the display configuration. My work laptop has a similar configuration and it does not do this. While it is obvious HP knows how to make this work, what is not obivious is why a "premium" machine would have such a simple and annoying issue.

Hi @IT2138,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Envy 17.3-inch laptop is experiencing an issue with its docking behavior, especially when restarting the system, which results in the monitors not being detected correctly unless the laptop lid is opened. This can be frustrating, especially given that your work laptop doesn't have this issue.

Here are some steps you can take to try to resolve the issue:

1. Update Graphics and Docking Drivers:

  • Ensure that all your graphics drivers and dock drivers are fully up-to-date.
  • Go to Device Manager (right-click on the Start menu > Device Manager) and check for any driver updates under Display adapters and Universal Serial Bus controllers for your dock.
  • You can also check for updates through HP Support Assistant or the HP website for your specific laptop model.

2. Adjust Power Settings:

  • Since the issue seems to be related to restarting, there might be an issue with how Windows is managing power states when coming out of a restart.
  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options and select Change plan settings for your active power plan. Then click Change advanced power settings.
  • Under USB settings > USB selective suspend setting, set it to Disabled to prevent Windows from turning off USB ports during restarts.
  • You might also want to check Sleep settings to ensure the system isn't trying to go into a sleep mode that affects the display outputs.

3. Modify Display Settings:

  • Go to Settings > System > Display.
  • Under the Multiple displays section, click Detect to manually force Windows to search for external monitors.
  • Check if the issue is tied to display settings, and set your desired configuration as the default.

4. Disable Fast Startup:

  • Windows 11 has a feature called Fast Startup that can sometimes cause issues with peripheral devices.
  • To disable it, go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
  • Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable and uncheck Turn on fast startup. This might help the laptop properly detect the monitors when restarting.

5. BIOS and Firmware Update:  Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Make sure your BIOS is up to date. HP sometimes releases updates to resolve issues with docking stations and display output.
  • You can find the latest BIOS update for your laptop on the HP support website.

6. Test with Another Dock or USB-C Port:

  • If possible, test with a different docking station or use another USB-C port on the laptop. Sometimes the issue can be with the dock or port itself.

7. Check for Windows Updates:

  • Ensure your Windows 11 system is fully updated, as there may be fixes for docking and display issues in the latest updates.
