Elitebook 840 G5
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Greetings! The hotkeys designated for screen brightness adjusment  (f3 and f4) do nothing.(Elitebook 840 G5 w 64 bit Windows 10).

I've seen similar problems posted for various other models, which the advice was to update the bios driver and hotkey support, but don't know whether that's appropriate for this model.  By the way, I have never seen that particular maneuver be reported to work.

This was not a case that it once worked and stopped.  It did not work from day 1. It puzzles me that HP would ship a new laptop in this state.

Any suggestions appreciated!

Hi:

Since I don't work for or represent HP, I can't answer as to why the notebook was not shipped with everything in 100% working order.

See this discussion below.  The 450 G5 is the cheaper model of the 850 G5.

So yes, I would recommend you reinstall the Hotkey driver, and restart the PC.

This package provides HP Hotkey support for special function keys on supported models that are running a supported operating system.

Updating the BIOS can be risky, so I cannot recommend that you do that unless you feel it is absolutely necessary to do so.

It worked. Your response was straightforward and did the trick.

I've solved this on multiple 830 G5 and 840 G5 laptops. They are running Windows 10 Enterprise 64-bit with update 1803 installed. I have installed the latest BIOS, HP Hotkey Support, AND the HP Collaboration Keyboard. It seems that the brightness Fn keys will only work after installing the collaboration software.
