Troubleshooting black screen issues on HP Notebooks: Click here to view the instructions!
HP Recommended

Hi,

I have a HP Pavillion 15eh Laptop (Product number: 31Y96EA#ABU  - Serial number:Edited and have recently encountered an issue with the screen brightness. I normally have the screen on max brightness, but it suddenly set itself to the dimmest setting, I try to use the brightness keys on the keyboard but nothing happens. When I use the brightness slider in Settings, sometimes it changes brightness and then resets back to minimum, sometimes it does nothing. Occasionally I can set the slider to 40% or so and it will stick, but taking it higher and it resets back to minimum (despite the slider saying 100% for example)

I have tried restarting multiple times, updating bios, graphics drivers are up to date, downloading AMD Adrenaline software, updating Windows etc. I even tried editing registry values to try to turn off adaptive brightness, however this has not made any difference. All over drivers up to date according to HP Support Assistant.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Shaun

Hi @ShaunV12

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how frustrating it feels when the brightness keeps resetting itself despite all the updates and checks you’ve already done. You’ve been very thorough, so let’s focus on the areas that can directly affect brightness control on your Pavilion 15‑eh.

Step 1: Check Display Power Settings

  1. Press Windows + ISystem > Power & battery > Additional power settings.
  2. Select your active power plan → Change plan settingsChange advanced power settings.
  3. Expand Display > Enable adaptive brightness.
  4. Set both On battery and Plugged in to Off.
  5. Apply and restart.

Step 2: Reinstall Display Driver

  1. Press Windows + XDevice Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters.
  3. Right‑click your AMD graphics driver → Uninstall device.
  4. Restart the laptop—Windows will reinstall the default driver.
  5. Then install the latest driver from HP’s support page for your model:
HP Pavilion 15‑eh Laptop Drivers & Software

Step 3: Check Monitor Driver

  1. In Device Manager, expand Monitors.
  2. Right‑click Generic PnP MonitorUninstall device.
  3. Restart—the driver will reinstall automatically.
  4. This refreshes communication between Windows and the display panel.

Step 4: Run HP App – Diagnose & Fix

  1. Open the HP App.
  2. Select your laptop → go to Diagnose & Fix.
  3. Run the tool—it will check brightness control and reinstall missing components if needed.

Step 5: Test in Safe Mode

  1. Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  2. Under Boot, select Safe boot → Restart.
  3. In Safe Mode, test brightness control.
    • If it works here, the issue is caused by a third‑party driver or software conflict.
    • If it doesn’t, the problem is at driver/firmware level.

You’ve already shown persistence by updating BIOS, drivers, and Windows. The next breakthrough will likely come from reinstalling the display and monitor drivers together, then testing brightness in Safe Mode.
