I am unable to change the brightness of my laptop screen. When I use the the brightness keys, the level indicator goes up and down, as though the brightness of the screen were changing, but the brightness remains at 100%. the same happens when I try to change the brightness through the power settings.

I have tried uninstalling the pnp driver and updating it, but this hasn't helped

Hi @Hayley123456,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

There are several potential solutions to the issue of your laptop screen brightness not changing despite the brightness level indicator showing movement. Let's go through some troubleshooting steps.

Update Graphics Driver

Sometimes, an outdated or corrupted graphics driver can cause brightness control issues. Ensure your graphics driver is up-to-date.

Update via Device Manager:

  • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  • Expand the Display adapters section.
  • Right-click on your graphics driver and select Update driver.
  • Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.

Download from Manufacturer's Website:

  • Identify your graphics card model (e.g., Intel, NVIDIA, AMD).
  • Visit the manufacturer's website and download the latest driver.
  • Install the driver following the on-screen instructions.

Check Power Plan Settings

Make sure your power plan settings are not interfering with the brightness control.

  1. Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
  2. Click on Change plan settings next to your selected power plan.
  3. Click on Change advanced power settings.
  4. Expand Display and then Enable adaptive brightness.
  5. Set both On battery and Plugged in to Off.
  6. Click Apply and OK.

Disable Adaptive Brightness

Adaptive brightness can sometimes cause issues with manual brightness adjustment.

  1. Open Settings > System > Display.
  2. Scroll down and click on Advanced display settings.
  3. Click on Display adapter properties for Display 1.
  4. Go to the Monitor tab and ensure the refresh rate is correct.
  5. If there is an option for adaptive brightness, disable it.

BIOS Update

Sometimes a BIOS update can resolve hardware-related issues.

  1. Identify your laptop model and visit the HP support website.
  2. Look for BIOS updates for your specific model.
  3. Download and follow the instructions to update the BIOS.

Windows Troubleshooter

Run the Windows troubleshooter to identify and fix issues related to display settings.

  1. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
  2. Click on Additional troubleshooters.
  3. Select Power or Hardware and Devices and run the troubleshooter.

Registry Edit

Editing the registry can sometimes fix brightness control issues, but be careful when making changes to the registry.

  1. Press Windows + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
  2. Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\DCI
  3. If there is a key named Brightness, double-click it and set its value to 0.
  4. If there is no Brightness key, right-click on the right panel, select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, name it Brightness, and set its value to 0.
  5. Restart your computer.

System Restore

If the issue started recently, you can try performing a system restore to revert your system to a point when the brightness control was working.

  1. Press Windows + S, type System Restore, and select Create a restore point.
  2. Click on System Restore.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to choose a restore point before the issue began.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
