I am unable to change the brightness of my laptop screen. When I use the the brightness keys, the level indicator goes up and down, as though the brightness of the screen were changing, but the brightness remains at 100%. the same happens when I try to change the brightness through the power settings.

I have tried uninstalling the pnp driver and updating it, but this hasnt helped

thanks for any advice!

Hi @dexter07,

Good Day.  Thank you for posting your query in the HP community.  I read the post regarding assistance with changing the screen brightness. I will be delighted to assist you here.

Superb description and spectacular troubleshooting and commendable diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this.

  • Did this happen after a software or windows update?
  • Have you reinstalled the graphics drivers?

For now, try these steps:

  • First, try this step to adjust the brightness from this HP link: http://hp.care/2D227eM  try the steps based on your operating system.
  • Then check if the issue gets fixed.

If it continues, try these steps:

  • Start -> Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Device Manager.
  • In the Device Manager window, look for “Monitors”, then right-click your monitor and select “Uninstall”. Be sure to also check the “Remove driver” option. Once removed, click the “Scan for hardware changes” icon.
  • There is a YouTube link included: Please check that out and follow the instructions mentioned in it: http://hp.care/2sD1SEE

Please do not click on any link, image, ad or download as it is a YouTube link used only for viewing.

This should do the trick for you.

If this does not fix the issue then try to uninstall and reinstall the graphics drivers.

  • Right-Click on start button> click device manager> expand display adapters>then select the display drivers that are listed and right-click on it and uninstall the drivers.
  • Check the box that states delete the software for this device.
  • Then restart the computer and update the bios chipset and graphics drivers from this link: http://hp.care/2syreDe  Select the country and type the product# of the unit. Then follow the onscreen instructions.
  • Then check if the issue gets resolved.

This should fix the issue as long as there are no hardware issues with the computer.

Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. It will definitely fix the issue for you.

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes. To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as Accepted Solution as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care and have a blessed week ahead. 🙂

Cheers!
