SOLUTION: HP picked-up my laptop and fixed the issue by replacing the screen and the motherboard. Beware: USB port now has a scratch on it and the privacy filter for the camera is missing, so HP is not very careful during the repair. It takes about 3 weeks, so I guess it's not worth it to get it fixed.
Hi,
I have owned this laptop for about a month now. However, something that I have noticed frequently is screen flickering, in particular when viewing the desktop background (changing it does help) or when scrolling through the Windows Settings and selecting or changing settings.
It is not that the screen turns off and on, but there is noticeable flickering in terms of brightness up and down. A friend who owns the exact same model does not recognise this behaviour. What causes this (is it some AMD Software Setting perhaps???) and more importantly: how do I get rid of this, as it is really annoying? All drivers are up to date and there are no pending updates at the moment.
Thanks in advance for commenting!
Kind regards,
Robbert

Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Screen flickering on your HP Omnibook Ultra 14 can indeed be frustrating, especially if it affects your usage while browsing the desktop or interacting with settings. Given that your laptop is fairly new and all drivers are up to date, there are a few potential causes for this issue, ranging from graphics driver problems to hardware issues. Below are steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially fix the screen flickering issue:
1. Check Power Settings and Adaptive Brightness
Sometimes, the flickering could be due to power-saving settings, especially if the screen brightness fluctuates based on system load or battery status.
- Disable Adaptive Brightness:
- Open Control Panel > Power Options.
- Click on Change plan settings next to the power plan you're using.
- Click on Change advanced power settings.
- Scroll down to Display, then Enable adaptive brightness.
- Set both the On Battery and Plugged In options to Off.
- Adjust Brightness: If you notice the flickering only happens when the screen brightness changes, try manually adjusting it by using the keyboard shortcut for brightness or the Windows Display Settings to set a consistent brightness level.
2. Update or Rollback Graphics Drivers
Flickering can often be caused by graphics driver issues, and while you mentioned that drivers are up to date, sometimes updating or even rolling back a driver can fix such problems.
Update AMD Graphics Driver:
- Visit the AMD website or use HP Support Assistant to download the latest driver for your laptop’s graphics card (ensure it's compatible with your exact model and Windows version).
- After updating, restart your system to see if the flickering persists.
Rollback Graphics Driver: If the issue began after a recent driver update, rolling back the graphics driver might help:
- Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click on your AMD graphics card and select Properties.
- In the Driver tab, click on Roll Back Driver if the option is available, and follow the on-screen instructions.
3. Disable Hardware Acceleration
Certain apps, including web browsers and other media players, may cause flickering due to hardware acceleration.
Disable Hardware Acceleration in Web Browsers:
- For Chrome:
- Open Google Chrome.
- Go to the menu (three dots) > Settings > Advanced.
- Under System, turn off Use hardware acceleration when available.
- Restart Chrome to see if the issue is fixed.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Rachel,
Thanks for posting your reply!
The adaptive brightness setting is not available on my laptop. However, while going through AMD's website, I did indeed find more updates (that did not show in the settings or in the HP Support Assistant app). Installing these seemed to have solved this issue at first glance.
I will monitor the behaviour the coming week (as the flickering does not occur consistently), if the flickering does not appear anymore, I will mark your answer as the solution!

Hi Rachel,
The screen flickering still occurs after the updates. It is not possible to roll back the drivers (this option is greyed out). I tried disabling the hardware acceleration of my browser, but this also does not help.
The flickering is most noticable on darker backgrounds/ colors.
Are there any more solutions that I could try?
Thanks in advance!
