My screen shuts off when I try to use the mouse after the computer has been asleep. Is there a fix for that?

@Dwainc, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.
I understand you're experiencing an issue where your HP Notebook screen shuts off when you try to use the mouse after the computer wakes from sleep. This can be frustrating, but I’ll guide you through a few steps to help resolve it.
Update Graphics and Chipset Drivers
Outdated or incompatible drivers can cause display issues after sleep.
- Go to Device Manager → Expand Display adapters
- Right-click your graphics driver (e.g., Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA) → Select Update driver
- Choose Search automatically for drivers
Alternatively, visit the HP Software and Driver Downloads page and enter your notebook model to get the latest drivers.
Change Power Management Settings
Sometimes, Windows disables devices to save power, which can cause wake issues.
- Press Windows + X → Select Device Manager
- Expand Mice and other pointing devices
- Right-click your mouse → Properties → Go to Power Management tab
- Uncheck: Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
- Click OK
Repeat the same for Keyboards and Network adapters if needed.
Enable Wake from Sleep for Mouse
- Go to Device Manager → Right-click your mouse → Properties
- Under Power Management, ensure "Allow this device to wake the computer" is checked
Check Sleep Settings
- Go to Settings → System → Power & battery → Additional power settings
- Click Change plan settings next to your selected plan
- Click Change advanced power settings
- Expand Sleep → Set Allow hybrid sleep to Off
- Expand USB settings → Set USB selective suspend setting to Disabled
Update Windows
Make sure your system is fully updated:
- Go to Settings → Windows Update → Click Check for updates
Perform a Hard Reset
If the issue persists, try a hard reset:
- Turn off the notebook
- Disconnect all external devices
- Unplug the power adapter
- Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds
- Reconnect the power and turn it on
I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

@Dwainc, Thank you for your response.
Since the initial steps didn’t resolve it, let’s try some advanced troubleshooting to dig deeper into the root cause.
Disable Fast Startup
Fast Startup can sometimes interfere with wake-from-sleep behavior.
- Go to Control Panel → Power Options
- Click Choose what the power buttons do
- Click Change settings that are currently unavailable
- Uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended)
- Click Save changes and restart your PC
BIOS Update
An outdated BIOS can cause power management issues.
- Visit HP Software and Driver Downloads
- Enter your notebook model
- Download and install the latest BIOS update
- Follow the on-screen instructions carefully
HP Hardware Diagnostics
Run a full system test to rule out hardware issues.
- Turn off the notebook
- Press Esc repeatedly, then F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics
- Run the System Tests → Especially Display and Power
Create a New User Profile
Sometimes, user profile corruption can cause strange behavior.
- Go to Settings → Accounts → Family & other users
- Click Add account → Create a new local user
- Log in with the new account and test the sleep/wake behavior
I hope this helps!
If my response resolves your issue, please click “Accepted Solution” to help others find the answer. Also, don’t forget to click the “Yes” button to say thanks!
Take care and have a great day.
