Hey everyone,

I'm facing a issue with my HP Victus 16 (about 2 years old) and wanted to check if anyone else has experienced something similar.

Randomly, the laptop screen starts flickering and at the same time the keyboard backlight also flickers. During this period, the laptop becomes almost unusable. Sometimes the display flashes repeatedly, the keyboard lights blink, and the system either freezes temporarily or becomes very difficult to use.

For those who have faced this:

What was the actual root cause?

Was it the display cable, GPU, motherboard, EC controller, or something else?

Did HP identify the problem?

How much did the repair cost if it was out of warranty?

Any suggestions on troubleshooting before I take it to a service center would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi @prigekhas,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for reaching out and for providing a detailed description of the issue. Since you're seeing both the display and keyboard backlight flickering at the same time, we'd first want to determine whether this is occurring at the hardware level or only within Windows.

As a first step, please check whether the issue occurs in the BIOS:

  1. Turn the notebook off.
  2. Turn it back on and repeatedly tap F10 to enter the BIOS.
  3. Leave the system on the BIOS screen for a few minutes and observe whether the display or keyboard backlight flickers there as well.

Please also run the HP Hardware Diagnostics:

  1. Turn the notebook off.
  2. Turn it back on and repeatedly tap Esc.
  3. Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  4. Run the Display Test.
  5. Run the Keyboard Test.
  6. Note the results and any Failure ID that may be generated.

Once you've completed the tests, please let us know:

  • Does the flickering occur in the BIOS?
  • Do the Display and Keyboard tests pass or fail?
  • Is a Failure ID reported?

If the diagnostics pass, I would also recommend making sure the system is fully up to date:

  • Check for updates in HP Support Assistant.
  • Go to Settings > Windows Update and install all available updates, including optional driver updates if available.

After updating, continue using the notebook for a period of time and monitor whether the issue returns.

Please share the test results and observations, and we'll be happy to help determine the next steps.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
