Envy 15 x360 bq004ng
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

Screen rotation based on position stopped working on my brand-new Envy notebook.

Originally the button was locked and grayed out, based on searching this forum I uninstalled "amd virtual buttons" and it started working again.

A day later however, while I can try and turn screen rotation lock on and off, the accelerometer doesn't trigger any actions.

I tried (and rebooted after each action):

- Updating everything, including HP software

- Editing the registry, enabling the rotation options manually

- Updated my AMD radeon drivers

- Removed every application that could negatively affect this function

- Updated/Reverted/removed/added again the driver for the sensors

- Reinstalled HP 3D Driveguard.

None of this had any effect.

Any ideas on what else I could do to make it work?

EDIT: Autorotation works in the login screen for some reason - the screen flipped during the Windows Hello scanning process - but then became stuck in the portrait mode on desktop. Every time I turned rotation lock off, it switched back to portrait.

So the accelerometer works - just not when the desktop loads.

I contacted your techsupport.

I've been told by a very uninterested person that since everything appears OK in my registry (the guy had trouble even saying the word, I doubt he had any idea what was going on), I'll need to reformat my drives and revert the PC to factory settings. No, I did not want to buy an external HDD just to back up 45 GB of my personal data, only because someone at HP messed up.

What kind of tech support is that?

The actual solution which I stumbled upon by random:

- It WAS the AMD Virtual Buttons software.

- Even when removing it, a damaged driver has been left behind, listing as Unindentified device.

- Solution: launch the AMD Clean Uninstall Utility. Reboot, download and install new drivers.

Working since then without a glitch.

So what I really needed to do from the start was to create a Windows 10 repair USB and clean-install as soon as I bought the PC, just to get rid of your HP bloatware.

WHY oh WHY would you supply software that breaks the PC as soon as the system auto-updates?

I wanted to be furious, but at this point I just don't care at all.

Hello, @Visterius – Hope you are well 🙂

Thank you for becoming an HP Forum member. It is a fantastic location to get help from the community, get suggestions and find what has worked for others!

I see that you are facing issues with the auto-rotation feature on your PC. When was the last time this worked on your PC? Also, what is the windows 10 version on your PC?

If the issue started happening after a recent update, then you might be able to restore the system to a point before. System Restore automatically creates restore points, a memory of the system files and settings on the computer at a particular point in time. Then, when you use System Restore to restore your computer to a point in time before an issue began, System Restore returns your computer to the files and settings from the restore point. Your personal files and documents are not affected.

Go to http://hp.care/2bS4d95 and follow the steps under “Restore your computer when Windows cannot start normally”.

If the issue persists, then you be required to perform a system recovery.

System recovery is the last step to troubleshoot this issue. This option reformats the system drive (usually C:), reinstalls the original operating system and reinstalls all the original hardware drivers and software. All you save files will be lost and your computer will be formatted to the day you purchased the machine.

Go to HP PCs - Reset the computer | HP® Support  and follow the steps under “Recovery when Windows 10 does not start correctly”.

Let me know if that helps!

Cheers 🙂

That's not exactly an option. That's just scappring everything on a work-pc and starting over. I'm looking for an actual solution - accelerometer firmware update, disabling services that might be causing this, etc.

Windows version: Home edition, 16299.19, release 1709 - Fall Creators Update as of yesterday (this new major update still hasn't changed anything).

Performed a system reset after all (Restore factory settings), the problem still persists.

Autorotation is enabled in the registry.

There is an unrecognized device found in Device manager - could it be related? Why would there be an unrecognized device on a brand new notebook?
