HP Recommended

My mothers laptop has recently gone to a completely blank, black screen. I pretty certain it's the backlight, seeing as when in direct light or when light is put close to it the screen becomes faintly visible again. She bought it new about 2 years ago I believe, but I'm pretty sure the default warranty only lasts 1. She works full time and it's used only used occasionally , at most 3 or so hours a day so I think it's ridiculous that something like the backlight would burn out already. Basically I just want to know if I have any options or if it's just a total loss.
