Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The screen will dim automatically depending on what is on screen, whether on battery or plugged in.

For example: a scene taking place at night, with a fire crackling. The brightness  of the scene will fluctuate as each flame flares and disappears, and so the screen will adjust its brightness automatically continuously.

Another example: a scene in which two characters, one outside at night, one inside a lit house, are having a conversation, the camera moving back and forth. The screen will dim when the character standing outside is on screen.

There is nothing I can find that helps. There's no "auto brightness" feature on the newer systems, and there is no Power setting that seems to work.

Please help!!

Hi @highlysuspect

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you.

Many modern Windows laptops now come with light sensors that automatically adjust the screen's brightness based on ambient lighting. The feature works inconsistently in Windows, which can make for a frustrating experience. If the brightness switching is driving you crazy, here's how to disable adaptive brightness.

1.       Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options, then click on "Change plan settings" next to your active power plan.

2.      Click on "Change advanced power settings."

3.      Scroll down to Display, then under Enable adaptive brightness, switch it off for both the battery and plugged in modes.

Adaptive brightness is available in Windows 7 and 8, but will only be visible if your hardware supports it. If your screen still seems possessed, check your display driver for a power-saving setting. On Intel cards, for example, turn off "display power-saving technology."

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Greetings from the future (2020), where we're using Windows 10.

Thanks for taking the time to cut and paste a reply, but this did not help.

The instructions I provided apply to a Win 10 PC too. If that did not help, try this:

1. Open the Windows start menu and click Settings (the Gear icon may on the left side of Start Menu).

2. In the settings window, click System.

3. The Display menu should be selected on the left, if not – click Display

4. Turn Off the Change brightness automatically when lighting changes.
If this option does not exist, try method 2 on the second tab at the top of this solution.

5. Click Apply to save changes.

Let me know how this goes.
