My HP Spectre x360 screen goes black when I try to flip it 360 flat and use it as a tablet. The screen comes back on when I slightly lift it up a couple of degrees off of tablet mode. I just recently rebooted the whole laptop so i dont think any driver would be corrupted. I can still hear the laptop CPU fans even if the screen has completely goes black so I know it is still on.

Hi @rayed__
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Thank you for providing those details. We understand the concern. Based on your description, the HP Spectre x360 continues running normally, but the display turns black only when the notebook reaches the fully flat 360° tablet position and returns as soon as the hinge is moved slightly away from tablet mode.
To better understand whether this is related to the display mode transition, hinge position detection, graphics switching, or a hardware connection, could you please share:
- The exact HP Spectre x360 model number (for example, 13-awxxxx, 14-efxxxx, 16-fxxxx, etc.).
- When did you first notice this behavior?
- Does the screen go black immediately at exactly 360° or also in tent/stand mode?
- When the screen turns black, do keyboard backlight and power LEDs remain on?
- If you connect an external monitor, does the external display continue working when the Spectre is folded completely flat?
- Have you recently installed any Windows, BIOS, graphics, or firmware updates before this started?
- When
We're looking forward to helping you get back up and running!
Regards,

model number=14-ef0xxx
I noticed this behaviour a month ago, and the screen doesn't go black in tent/stand mode, but only at full 360. In full 360 tablet mode, the backlight of the keyboard and the power LED turn off in flat 360 mode, and when I open it back into laptop mode, it opens to the lock screen. When I connect an external monitor, the external display doesn't work when the Spectre is folded completely flat.

Hi @rayed__,
Thank you for the additional information. Based on what you've described, this does not appear to be a Windows, driver, or graphics issue.
the Spectre is most likely incorrectly detecting the fully folded tablet position and triggering a sleep/modern standby state, or there may be an issue with the hinge angle sensor (Hall sensor) that detects when the notebook reaches 360°.
Try these simple steps:
1. Disable Sleep When the Lid Is Closed
- Open Control Panel -Power Options.
- Select Choose what closing the lid does.
- Set When I close the lid to Do Nothing for both Battery and Plugged In.
- Click Save Changes.
- Test tablet mode again.
2. Update the BIOS
For the HP Spectre x360 14-ef series:
- Open HP Support Assistant.
- Check for and install the latest BIOS, chipset, and firmware updates.
- Restart the notebook.
3. Test in Safe Mode
Boot into Windows Safe Mode and fold the notebook to 360°.
- If the issue disappears, a software or driver component may be involved.
- If it still occurs, the problem is likely hardware-related.
If disabling the lid-close action and updating the BIOS do not resolve the issue, the most likely cause is a faulty hinge-position sensor or related hardware component inside the Spectre x360. Since the system behaves as though it is being commanded to sleep only at the exact 360° position, service may be required.
I hope this helps.
