I recently bought a new HP OmniBook 3 laptop, but I am having an issue with the display.
The screen looks dull, washed out, and has a grey/hazy layer over it all the time—from the HP boot logo screen to Windows desktop. I checked all software, HDR, and display settings, but nothing helped.
Is this fuzzy/grayish appearance typical for the base panel on this model due to its anti-glare coating and lower color gamut (%62.5 sRGB), or could it be a hardware defect with the backlight/panel?

Hi @ccaa11
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Thank you for providing the details. We understand how a dull, hazy, or washed-out display on a new HP OmniBook can be concerning, especially when the appearance is visible from the HP startup screen before Windows loads.
Since the grayish or fuzzy appearance is present during the HP boot logo screen as well as within Windows, this suggests the behavior is not solely related to Windows display settings, color profiles, or software configuration.
The HP OmniBook 3 16-inch series may use an anti-glare panel, and anti-glare coatings can sometimes create a slightly softer appearance compared to glossy displays. In addition, displays with a lower color gamut specification can appear less vibrant than higher-gamut panels. However, the screen should still provide a clear image without a persistent gray veil, excessive haze, or noticeably washed-out appearance.
To help determine whether this is panel-related or a display hardware concern, try the following checks:
Enter the BIOS
- Turn off the notebook.
- Power it on and repeatedly tap F10 to enter BIOS Setup.
- Observe the BIOS screen carefully.
- If the same gray, dull, or hazy appearance is visible in BIOS, the behavior is likely independent of Windows.
Run HP Hardware Diagnostics UEFI
- Power off the notebook.
- Turn it on and repeatedly tap F2.
- Select Component Tests.
- Run the Display Test.
- Note whether any display abnormalities are reported.
Compare Brightness and Viewing Angles
- Set brightness to 100%.
- View a pure white background and a solid black background.
- Check whether the haze is uniform across the entire panel or more visible in specific areas.
Verify Graphics Driver and BIOS Updates
- Open HP Support Assistant or visit HP Support.
- Install any available BIOS, chipset, and graphics driver updates specifically released for the HP OmniBook 3 16-bu0000 series.
- Restart and re-evaluate the display.
Test with an External Monitor
- Connect the notebook to an external display.
- If the external display appears normal while the notebook panel continues to look washed out, that points more toward the integrated display panel rather than the graphics subsystem.
Based on the information shared so far, a slightly less vibrant appearance could be consistent with the panel specifications, but a constant gray or hazy layer visible from power-on is not something we would generally expect to see to a significant degree.
Could you share whether the display looks the same while viewing the BIOS (F10) screen and whether the HP Display Test reports any issues? That information would help narrow down whether this is characteristic of the panel or the result of a display hardware condition.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
