Hi @Kay379,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for reaching out. If your HP laptop powers on but the screen remains black, please try the following steps:

1. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Disconnect the AC adapter.
  • Disconnect all external devices (USB drives, printers, docks, etc.).
  • Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the AC adapter and turn the laptop on.

2. Increase the Screen Brightness

  • Press the brightness increase key on the keyboard several times to make sure the display is not dimmed all the way down.

3. Test with an External Monitor

  • Connect the laptop to an external monitor or TV.
  • Turn on the laptop.
  • Press Windows + P several times to cycle through the display modes.
  • Check whether an image appears on the external display.

4. Check for LED Blink Codes

When you press the Power button:

  • Does the Caps Lock or Num Lock key light blink?
  • If so, count the number of blinks and let us know the pattern.

5. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Turn the laptop off.
  • Turn it on and immediately tap F2 repeatedly.
  • If HP PC Hardware Diagnostics opens, run the Memory Test and System Tests.

6. Try HP BIOS Recovery

  • Turn the laptop off.
  • Press and hold Windows + B.
  • While holding those keys, press and hold the Power button for 2–3 seconds.
  • Release the Power button but continue holding Windows + B until the BIOS Recovery screen appears.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions if the recovery starts.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
