HP Pavilion Laptop 15-eh0015cl

My screen's brightness has completely stopped working. It's constantly dim and the slider doesn't work.

So far I've tried:

Updating monitor/display drivers

Reinstalling drivers

updating windows

replacing RAM sticks

running full diagnostic test (all passed)

Nothing has worked so far. Is this a busted screen at this point? Is there anything else I can try?

Hi @opeth55,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I'm sorry you're dealing with this frustrating screen issue—it's disappointing when nothing seems to fix the problem. Let's see if we can identify the root cause and get your display working properly again.

  • Have you noticed any physical damage to the screen or hinges that might indicate a hardware issue?
  • Does the screen remain dim even in the BIOS menu or when booting into Safe Mode?
  • Are you using the laptop with its built-in screen only, or do you see the same issue when connecting to an external monitor?

Let's try these steps.

Check Brightness in BIOS:
Restart your laptop and press the designated key (likely Esc or F10) to enter the BIOS. If the screen is dim in the BIOS as well, it could indicate a hardware issue with the display or the backlight.

Disable Adaptive Brightness:

  • Go to Settings > System > Display > Brightness and Color.
  • If available, turn off Change brightness automatically when lighting changes.
  • In the Control Panel, go to Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings, expand Display, and turn off adaptive brightness.

Test with an External Monitor:
Connect an external monitor to your laptop. If the external display works correctly, it suggests the issue is specific to the laptop's screen or its backlight.

Perform a Clean Boot:

  • Open System Configuration (msconfig) and select the Selective Startup option under the General tab.
  • Disable all startup programs in the Startup tab via Task Manager.
  • Restart the system and test the brightness. This will help rule out software conflicts.

Check the Backlight or Inverter:

  • A constantly dim screen with flickering could indicate a failing backlight or screen inverter. You can test this by shining a flashlight on the screen to see if the display is faintly visible. If so, the backlight may need repair or replacement.

If these steps don't resolve the issue, the problem may indeed be hardware-related. Given the symptoms and the steps you've already tried, it's possible that the screen's backlight or related components are failing.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
