Hi guys,
I have a peculiar problem and I cannot find the reason for this. It used to go back and forth to normal to where it is now after the problems with battery arised. When my computer was not connected to a power source and system would shut down automatically and after restarting my screen had this problem but if I manually turn it off, it used to come back to normal. Now my screen is permanantly displayed in this manner. I will try my best to explain the situation and I will add a pic to help understand.
My screen only shows up 80% of the way. The rest of the screen is blacked out. Another thing is that the top of my screen also comes on the bottom of the screen. Please help in any way possible. I have tried the display options but no help.
Thank you for your help

Welcome to HP Support Forums. 🙂 I came across your post and would like to help.
I understand that you have an HP Pavilion dv5-1234ca Entertainment Notebook. I read that it is facing display issues. Only 80% of the screen is showing up. Not worry, I'll do my best to help you.
I would like to know the following information to assist you better:
- Does the laptop overheat or did it overheat before this issue started?
- Did you experience any other issues with the laptop.
I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:
- Power off the laptop.
- Remove the battery out. If the battery is integrated and does not have a latch to release it then leave the battery inside the laptop.
- Disconnected AC adapter from the laptop.
- Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
- Reconnect the battery and plug the AC adapter.
- Power ON the laptop.
If the display issue persists then I suggest to check the display in the BIOS. The following steps will help:you
- Shutdown the laptop.
- Power on the laptop and hit the f10 key repeatedly (7-8 times) to enter the BIOS.
- If the display issue persists in the BIOS then it confirms a hardware defect towards the screen. In such a case I suggest you HP phone support to explore the service options for the laptop.
to contact our
If the display is fine in BIOS then we may uninstall the graphics drivers and then reinstall them. The following steps will help:
- Open the device manager.
- Expand "display adapters". Right click on the display drivers and select uninstall.
- Close the device manager.
- Restart the laptop. While restarting, Windows should automatically reinstall the display drivers.
I sincerely hope this fixes the issue. Let me know how it goes. Cheers! 🙂

Dear MKazi,
Thank you for the suggestions.
Firstly to your question, yes the computer did overheat repeatedly. I got this computer about 8 years ago. I kept the computer usually on my bed (memory foam- so the heat was not dispersed - so it could be my fault). Sometimes it was so hot while using that I used cardboard to dampen the heat and used it. Then after ~3.5 years the battery died, and at the time I didn't have the time to change it but it used to return to normal usually manual shutdown via powerbutton. But once I changed the battery, it has not returned back to normal.
So I did as you suggested, and even the BIOS, the screen is in the same manner. So I guess I will contact the HP phone support. I really like this computer and the only problem I had with this computer other than it being a bit heavy is the HD so I upgraded it, now it's much better and still works well.
I haven't seen any laptops of HP like this one. Do you have any suggestions for HP laptops because it's almost time to get a new one.
Thank you for your help.
