Hi @Rogerbuild,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP Laptop 17 might be encountering an issue related to power settings or possibly a hardware problem. Here are a few steps to troubleshoot the issue.
Check Power Settings:
- Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep.
- Under Screen, make sure that the settings for when the laptop is plugged in and on battery are not set too aggressively. For example, set them to "Never" to rule out power-saving features causing the screen to turn off.
Check Sleep Settings:
- In the same Power & sleep settings, ensure that the laptop is not set to sleep when closing the lid. You can also check Additional power settings > Choose what closing the lid does and set it to Do nothing for both On battery and Plugged in.
Update Graphics Drivers:
- Go to Device Manager (right-click the Start button and select Device Manager).
- Expand the Display adapters section, right-click your graphics card, and select Update driver. Follow the prompts to update the driver.
Check for BIOS and Firmware Updates:
- Sometimes, screen issues can be resolved by updating the BIOS or firmware. Visit the HP support website and check if there are any updates available for your laptop model.
Perform a Hard Reset:
- Turn off your laptop, unplug it from any power source, and remove the battery (if removable). Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds, then reinsert the battery, plug in the power, and start the laptop.
Check for Malware:
- Run a full system scan using your antivirus software to rule out any malware that might be causing the issue.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
