My touchscreen laptop's screen shuts off whenever I try to use the mouse or touchpad. When I touch the screen, it comes back on but goes off again when I move the mouse. I posted earlier, and someone recommended a hard reset, which worked for a couple of days. Now it's back to the screen going blank again. The drivers say they are up to date. I'd be grateful for any help!

Hi @Dwainc

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for following up. Based on your description and the model involved, this issue appears to be tied to a power management or graphics driver conflict—especially since the screen responds to touch but not to mouse or touchpad input.

A hard reset temporarily clears the problem, which suggests it's not a permanent hardware fault but rather a recurring system-level glitch.

Here’s what I recommend checking next:

1. Disable Fast Startup

This feature can interfere with wake and display behavior:

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do
  • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable
  • Uncheck Turn on fast startup
  • Save changes and restart

2. Perform a Clean Reinstall of Graphics Driver

Even if the driver is up to date, a clean reinstall can resolve hidden conflicts:

  • Open Device Manager > Display adapters
  • Right-click your graphics driver (Intel or AMD) > Uninstall device
  • Check the box for Delete the driver software for this device if available
  • Restart your laptop
  • Download and install the latest driver from the HP Notebook 15-dy1023dx support page

3. Run HP UEFI Diagnostics

This helps rule out hardware faults:

  • Turn off the laptop
  • Press Esc repeatedly, then F2 to open diagnostics
  • Run the Display and System Board tests

4. Test in BIOS

To isolate the issue from Windows:

  • Restart and enter BIOS (press F10 at startup)
  • Use the touchpad or mouse to navigate
  • If the screen stays on, the issue is likely software-related

If the screen still shuts off during BIOS navigation, it may point to a deeper hardware issue such as a loose display cable or embedded controller fault. If it only happens in Windows, we can explore additional power and driver settings.

Let me know what you observe after these steps—I’ll guide you further based on what you find.
