*HP 15DY 1023 DX LAPTOP*
My screen suddenly went completely blank. You can barely make out the HP symbol and the time if you look very hard but nothing else. My ex was able to connect through TeamViewer and says all my display settings are okay. She also says the graphic card is good and questions whether it's the back light or possibly the LCD panel that needs to be replaced. She's a network administrator but lives in Florida and I'm in northern New Jersey so she can't physically be here. Any suggestions would be welcome.
If I must bring for repair, any suggestions in the northern New Jersey / New York City area would be helpful as well.

Hi @deano122 ,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like the issue is likely with the backlight or the LCD panel of your HP 15 laptop. Here are some steps and suggestions to diagnose and resolve the issue:
Check the Display with an External Monitor
- Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV using HDMI or VGA.
- If the external monitor works fine, it confirms that your graphics card is functional, and the issue is with the laptop's display (backlight or LCD panel).
Adjust Brightness
- Ensure the brightness isn't accidentally turned down. Use the brightness keys on your keyboard to increase it.
- Verify that the brightness settings in Windows are correctly configured:
- Go to Settings > System > Display > Adjust Brightness and color.
Perform a Power Reset
- Shut down your laptop.
- Unplug it from the charger and remove the battery (if removable).
- Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds.
- Reconnect the charger and battery, then power it on.
Inspect the Display Cable
- If you're comfortable opening your laptop, check the ribbon cable connecting the LCD panel to the motherboard. A loose or damaged cable could cause the issue.
Identify a Backlight Issue
- Use a flashlight and shine it on the screen at an angle. If you can see faint images or text, the backlight is likely the issue. This can be caused by:
- A faulty backlight (LED or inverter).
- A blown fuse on the motherboard controlling the backlight.
- A malfunctioning screen cable.
Replacement Options
- Backlight Replacement: Requires technical skill and often involves replacing the entire LCD screen assembly.
- LCD Panel Replacement: If the backlight is integrated into the LCD, replacing the panel is the best solution.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
