Troubleshooting black screen issues on HP Notebooks: Click here to view the instructions!
HP Recommended

I've been having the same problem with my pavilion 13-an0012tu where the screen will go blank for no reason and at random times. This happens even after there are no more updates suggested by the HP Support Assistant. At first I thought it's a driver problem so after I checked, the display driver used is actually the latest one from Intel for this chipset but isn't the recommended (latest) one from HP. So I started to use the latest version by HP (not latest according to Intel) but it still does the same thing.

When it happens, I usually just close the lid (it will either go to sleep when on battery or just shuts down display when on adapter, it's already blank anyways), then when I open the lid again, the screen works. But it's very annoying since I could be transferring a file or installing something when it happens and I'd rather not have that interrupted or have to repeat the process because I have to put it to sleep first (which I shouldn't have to in the first place).

Welcome to HP support community.

Check if the issue persists in the BIOS screen.

  1. Turn on or restart the computer.
  2. While the display is blank, press the f10 key to enter the BIOS settings menu. The BIOS settings menu is accessible by pressing the f2 or the f6 key on some computers.

Stay for sometime on  the Bios and check if the issue persists.

Update the BIOS on the computer from HP.com page.

Refer this HP document for the steps:- Click here

Uninstall the graphics card drivers from device manager

  1. Click Start, type Device Manager, and press Enter.
  2. Find and double-click the graphics card which would be listed under Display Adapters.
  3. Right-click the device, and click Uninstall.
  4. Windows will prompt you to confirm the device’s removal. Click OK to remove the driver.

Reinstall the driver from HP.com page:- Click here

Let me know how it goes.

@Sandytechy20 ,

That didn't fix the problem. Uninstalling, then later on either using whatever windows came up with when it reinstalled it or updating the driver to the one from hp or intel both still didn't fix it. Updating the bios also didn't fix it. There's no more update that haven't been installed (no more suggestion from the hp support software).

HP PC Hardware Diagnostics for Windows is a Windows-based utility that allows you to run diagnostic tests.

  1. Click on the Download button and install the latest HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
    DOWNLOAD
  2. After Installation, select Start from your PC, and select HP Help and Support. Right-click HP PC Hardware Diagnostics for Windows, select More, and then select Run as administrator.
  3. The app opens to the main menu. Click display and touchscreen issues .
  4. From the component test menu, select Processor test and start the test.
HP also recommends running an Extensible Test, listed under System Test to determine any hardware failures.
  5. If the hardware test is Passed, it will be there from Hardware Failure. In the case of the test Failed, it will display an error code.
    • You can use the HP Failure ID decoder to find out more information about the error code and find further Top assistance or repair options based on your warranty.

I hope that helps.
