Yesterday I bought a replacement pen for my HP Spectre x360 (had lost the original one) from this address:
https://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=1MR94AA&opt=UUF&sel=ACC
Initially it worked fine, but today it has completely stopped working - absolutely nothing is registered when I move it near the screen or tap it on (the screen still responds as normal to touch input though).
I've tried a bunch of things I've found online, including updating the system BIOS (through HP Support Assistant) uninstalling/reinstalling both the Bluetooth and touchscreen drivers (via Device Manager). None of it has helped.
A couple of notes:
- During all of this the pen briefly started working again for approximately 1 minute, but it's since dropped back out again.
- I've tried out a friend's active stylus from a 3rd party manufacturer (this one) and that is recognised by my laptop, although the input is somewhat less reliable than when the HP Pen was originally working.
Should I assume that this is a hardware issue with the pen itself?

I believe it is a compatibility issue.
The only stylus that I see listed as compatible with your Spectre 13 is the HP Tilt pen product number 2MY21AA.
That is not the one you purchased.
My personal HP Spectre 13-ap000 x360 was delivered with an HP Tilt pen. and it has worked without any issues.
You may have to request a return to get the correct stylus for your Spectre 13.

Thanks for your fast response. Would incompatibility explain my experience of the stylus first working flawlessly, then dropping out after a day? I'd naively assume that it would prevent it working at all, but willing to be corrected on that!

Another follow-up: on this page it seems to show that both the HP Pen (1MR94AA) and the HP Tilt Pen (1MR94AA) are compatible with the HP Spectre x360 13-ae0xx:
