Troubleshooting black screen issues on HP Notebooks: Click here to view the instructions!
HP Recommended

Mine started working again when I just left it for a while. I didn't need to disable anything and now everything is working fine.

Have you tried rebooting again?

Stopping and disabling app readiness service by starting services.msc from task manager while my spectre x360 was sitting on the black screen immediately fixed the problem.

I was thinking something was wrong with my device as I bought it the day after this update (KB4038788) was released, so everything broke on my first post-setup-wizard reboot..

Thanks all!

Same behavior on my new HP Spectre.  If I turn it off, then back on, it comes back to normal after update.  Very strange.

I just went on HP online support/chat and they did a bios update on my spectre x360.  The first thing they did was disable the app readiness and then proceeded to update the BIOS.  My computer is about 5 weeks old.

After several restarts it does seem back to normal.

Thanks for doing the hard work of getting an answer from hp support - hoping this works when it also doesn't want to wake up from sleep. It has happened randomly in the past week, so hard to reproduce.  Computer is about 3 weeks old so it's very frustrating.

Same darn thing is happening to me.  What gives.  I will waiting for windows to finish.  I have owned the tablet for a week.  This is quite annoying!

I just checked the App Readiness and it was disabled; it never got set back while they were doing the bios updates.

I set it back to automatic and restarted and after logging in the screen went black again.  I just disabled the App Readiness and restarted and after logging in - no black screen.

So I don't think the bios updates helped this problem at all.

It's great to have this temporary fix!

So everyone with the same issues can disable 'App Readiness' in msconfig's services tab, hit apply, ok, restart.

Problem should be fixed.

Impatiently waiting for an official fix since i don't like to disable services i don't know 😉

I hope either HP or Mircosoft can offer us some more clarity soon.

I bought my Spectre two weeks ago and been facing the same issue since last night. What I did to temporarily fix it is I opened the Control Panel from the Task Manager and then searched for "Uninstall Windows Update" and manually uninstalled the latest (Sept-2017) Windows update (see the install date of the updates in that list for confirmation) something like (KBxxxx7887 - I presume) and then my PC restarted and everything becae fine. Obviously, I knew that Windows was going to be automatically updated again (sucks, right?) and so, I went into Windows Update settings and paused it.

Note: It remains paused for 35 days max and I do hope that HP and Microsoft better figure this out in that time.

Peace !!
