The screen of this laptop would momentarily freeze for less than a second (literally happening as I'm typing this now). But keyboard inputs are fine (the letters I type shows up together after the freeze). Was wondering what the issue was and how to fix it as it happens very frequently and disrupts my work?

Welcome to the HP Support Community – it’s great to have you here!

I appreciate you taking the time to share your question. I'm more than happy to assist with this and provide a solution that works for you.

I understand how disruptive these momentary screen freezes can be, especially when you're in the middle of work. Since your keyboard input continues uninterrupted, this likely points to a graphics driver, background process, or display-related issue rather than a hardware fault.

Let’s go through a few steps to troubleshoot and resolve this:

Update Graphics Drivers

Split-second freezes are often caused by outdated or incompatible graphics drivers.

Intel Graphics:

  • Visit the Intel Driver & Support Assistant to automatically detect and install the latest drivers.

NVIDIA Graphics (if applicable):

  • Go to NVIDIA Driver Downloads and enter your GPU model.
  • For Spectre x360 models with NVIDIA RTX graphics, we recommend using Studio Drivers for stability.

Check for Windows Updates

Sometimes, Windows updates include important display and system stability fixes.

  • Go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates.
  • Install all available updates, including optional ones under Advanced options > Optional updates.

Disable Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling

This feature can cause micro-freezes on some systems.

  1. Go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics settings.
  2. Scroll down and toggle Hardware-accelerated GPU schedulingOFF.
  3. Restart your laptop.

Clean Boot to Rule Out Background Apps

A clean boot helps identify if third-party apps are causing the issue.

  1. Press Win + R, type msconfig, and hit Enter.
  2. Under Services, check Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all.
  3. Go to the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager.
  4. Disable all startup items.
  5. Restart your laptop.

If the issue disappears, re-enable services one by one to find the culprit.

Run HP Diagnostics

Use HP’s built-in diagnostics to rule out hardware issues:

  • Restart your laptop and press F2 repeatedly to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • Run the System Test > Graphics Test and Display Test.

BIOS Update (if available)

An outdated BIOS can cause display glitches.

  • Visit your laptop’s support page on HP Support page
  • Download and install the latest BIOS version for your exact model.

I hope your issue is now resolved. If not, feel free to reply and we’ll continue helping until everything’s sorted!
