HP SPECTRE 13 (kaby-lake)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi, I'm new to this community. I found something weird to my pretty brand new Spectre 13 (kaby-lake) (bought date 12nd of July).

Since couple of days, when I'm turning on my Spectre, the HP logo appears, the circle of dots are spinning and just a blink of eye before it loads Windows logon screen, during the last moment of HP logo appearing, the scrren gets (I don't know how to accurately describe it) distorted.

And it only happens when I turn Spectre on, only on that one milisecond. I don't know is this something to be worry about and if it needs to be send back or it will be allright?

Secondly, yesterday I was browsering the web, and than the right part of the screen (about 1/5 od length) turned darker much more darker than the rest of the screen. I was shocked but adjusting the brightness manages to fully recover the flat-rate brightness. But like teh first problem I'm wondering is this is just some software artecacts and I have nothing to be worry about or is my Spectre faulty?

In real life it's less visible than on the picture I attached.

Is this a common problem?20170906_161718.jpg

 @Phoenix92 Welcome to the community!

This doesn't seem normal to me. I am using as my loaner this year a Spectre X360 13 ac0xx and have never seen either issue. Could be driver related or could be hardware.

Have you checked your Support page for driver updates? If you don't know how to find it post the Product or Model number. To get the info, minimize all open windows so you can see your desktop screen. next hold the fn key and press esc key.

@CherylG thanks for answer.

All drivers (excluding BIOS/UEFI) are up-to-date.

What is weird for me is that this kind of screen distortion shows up only on that one hp screen, nowhere else. And what could be importatn, it doesn't show everytime. All HP diagnostic tools shows no problems.

But I found something strange about finding a serial numer. Holding the fn key + esc gives no reaction. The same in case of holding the combination of Ctrl + Alt + S or Ctrl + Alt + Esc. And I'm saying that it is strange because about 2 weeks ago I have used the mentioned combination to obtain the s/n in order to check the warranty. And then it worked out. So what happend that now it gives me zero reaction?

- and yes, I have HP System Event Utility installed,

- and yes, I have FN key enebled in the BIOS.

Another fact is that in computer properties (right click on computer icon on desktop) system has showed me that my Spectre ic capable of touch facility with two points of touch - which is as we know a lie. Today it changed to normal state, and shows no touch facility. Maybe it is because yesterday it was updating something from Windows Update.

@Phoenix92

In Properties mine shows -Pen and Touch Support with 10 Touchpoints.

 Odd about fn + esc not working. I think I would be in contact with HP about that and the strange screen artifacts. The screen issue may simply be a cable to display- or other. I had a similiar issue on a laptop a few years ago where it was gpu failure. Of course the artifacts were worse- it showed up as lines on screen while in Windows. But the fact your screen turns darker in one section is troubling.

@CherylG, well, I read something about simillar artifacts and its roots, which are mainly faulty gpu. I hope it is not that bad... And because the brightness problem appear only once I will watch it. And if it appears again, I'll take it back to store.

What is new, after recent update the system loading time is even shorter and right now I'm not able to see the artifacts. So I hope it won't show again. But if so, I'll take a photo this time.

About touchpoints in your case it's normal 'cause it's x360, but mine is Spectre 13 without touchscreen, so such system info was weird to me 🙂

I didn't find solution for esc+fn case, but I found on the Web that it's kind a common problem.
