If your Synaptics SMBus Touchpad is visible in Device Manager but not functioning or configurable, here are a few steps to help resolve the issue:
Check Touchpad Settings in Windows
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
- Ensure the Touchpad toggle is turned On.
- If the option is missing, proceed to the next steps.
Update or Reinstall the Touchpad Driver
- Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
- Right-click Synaptics SMBus Touchpad and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- If no update is found, try Uninstall device, then restart your laptop. Windows should reinstall the driver automatically.
Alternatively, you can manually download the latest touchpad driver from HP: Official HP® Support
Use HP PC Hardware Diagnostics
- Turn off the laptop.
- Press Esc repeatedly, then F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
- Select Component Tests > Mouse/Touchpad and run the test.
BIOS Update (if applicable)
Sometimes, a BIOS update can resolve hardware detection issues:
- Visit HP support page and enter your product name to check for updates.
System Restore (if issue started recently)
- Press Windows + R, type rstrui.exe, and press Enter.
- Follow the prompts to restore your system to a point when the touchpad was working.
