Often my touchpad stops working after letting the computer to go off/sleep. This happens always together with the cursor disappearing. Sometimes also the touch screen stops working at the same time but not always. Never the Touchpad stops working while working on the laptop even for several hours. The external mouse always works. I have tried all the suggestions on this website with no success. The only way to restore the cursor/touchpad is to force a shut down and restart the laptop.

Do you have any suggestion to fix this? is this a software or hardware problem?

Hi @FRAM777,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I’m sorry you’re going through this; I understand the concern and don’t worry I’ll help you with this.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

What exact model of HP laptop are you using?

Does the issue happen every single time after sleep, or only intermittently?

When the touchpad fails, does Device Manager still list the touchpad under “Human Interface Devices” or “Mice and other pointing devices”?

Here are some troubleshooting steps worth trying:

  • Update drivers: Use HP Support Assistant or go to HP’s support page for your model to install the latest touchpad and chipset drivers. Outdated drivers often cause sleep/wake issues.
  • Power management settings: In Device Manager, right‑click the touchpad device → Properties → Power Management tab. Uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.” Do the same for USB controllers.
  • BIOS update: Check HP’s support site for a BIOS update. Sleep/wake bugs are sometimes fixed at the firmware level.
  • Windows Fast Startup: Disable Fast Startup (Control Panel → Power Options → Choose what the power buttons do → Turn off Fast Startup). This can reduce wake‑related glitches.
  • Test with Safe Mode: Boot into Safe Mode, put the laptop to sleep, and wake it. If the touchpad works there, the issue is likely driver/software related.
  • Touchscreen link: Since the touchscreen sometimes fails too, this points to a broader input driver or power management conflict rather than a single hardware fault.

When the cursor disappears, do you notice if pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del brings it back temporarily, or is it completely gone until restart? That detail will help confirm whether Windows is losing track of the input drivers or if the hardware is failing to reinitialize after sleep.

I hope this helps.

I'm glad I could help! 😊 If this resolved your issue, please mark it as "Accepted Solution" and click "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?" Your feedback not only keeps us going but also helps others find the solution faster!

Take care and have an amazing day ahead!
