Zbook Studio G5 and Thunderbolt Dock G2
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi!

I have a problem with the screen resolution when using the Thunderbolt Dock G2; I am not able to choose the highest resolution of displays ( 1920x1200 ).

One of the displays has the option to set 1920x1080, whilst the other has 1680x1050 as the highets options.
They are both connected to the DisplayPort via DVI adapters.
Both the adapters and the cables have been used in an identical setup.

I have not been able to find any drivers that solve this issue, either through the forums or the support assistant.

Can anyone shed some light on the situation?

The Thunderbolt Dock G2 is certainly capable of high resolution support; I am writing this on a ZBook Studio x360 G5 with a Thunderbolt Dock G2 attached connected to a Dell UP2718Q via a DisplayPort cable. The Dell is running at 4K (3840 x 2160) at 60Hz in 30 bit colour. The internal DreamColor screen of my ZBook is also running at 4K (3840 x 2160) at 60Hz in 30 bit colour.

The use of DVI shouldn't be an issue. Single link DVI-D is capable of 1920 x 1200 at 60Hz in 24 bit colour. 30 bit monitors are rare at this time.

Two 1920 x 1080 monitors at 60Hz in 24 bit colour should be well within the capabilities of the dock on any system HP list this dock as an accessory for.

The DisplayPort functionality of the dock needs no drivers directly - though you should have the latest GPU and Thunderbolt drivers installed on your ZBook. If there is a BIOS / system firmware update for the ZBook, it is worth considering installing that as well, though I would read the release notes and instructions carefully before proceeding. HP Support Assistant will show if there are any outstanding updates.

I am not aware of any firmware updates for the Thunderbolt Dock G2. There has been a firmware update for the earlier Thunderbolt 3 Dock.

It is worth checking if there are any drivers or INF files you can install for the troublesome monitor so that the system knows what resolutions it is capable of. The lack of such a driver or INF file might be the root cause of your issue.

I have installed all the drivers explained by HP support via phone.

Unfortunately, that only resulted on that the laptop is no longer able to detect the docking station.

Now the USB and network is non-functional as well.

I have testet the screen resolution further and it seems that as long as I connect two external monitors at the same time, it is not able to maintain the resolution. If I connect them one at a time however, it works.

I have not received any answer from HP support after I was advised to update my drivers.
