Issue as described by OP. Can't REALLY TURN OFF the pen, since it works when "turned off" (LED completely off), but doesn't work at all a couple days later, presumably when it's been discharged. I use the pen once every 1-3 weeks.

This can occur if the pen is carried or stored in such a way that there is pressure on the tip because even slight pressure on the tip activates the pen. If the pen is constantly activated (pressure on the tip), the battery can be drained is less than 48 hours.

 

To maximize pen battery life, store the pen carefully so that the tip is not in contact with anything. If placing the pen in a bag or back pack, place it in a pen holder compartment (if available) with the tip up so that it does not press on anything. Even the slightest pressure on the tip can activate the pen and drain the battery.

Interesting. 

While I didn't know that, I can't help but wonder; Since I am using the Laptop-sleeve that was included in the package of the laptop along the tilt pen:

 

Isn't the sleeve designed to consider this fact?

Or should I also be cautious on how to store the pen in the "pen pocket" of the sleeve?

The sleeve is specifically design to protect the Notebook alone. The slightest pressure on the tip will get the pen activated and thus lose battery charge. The best way to keep the pen is to place it in a pen holder compartment (if available) with the tip facing upwards.

I also wonder, if this is a known issue:

1. Why hasn't this advice been shared before?

2. Why isn't the pen sold with a suitable case or cover to prevent the tip from activating needlessly?

Hi @KrazyToad,

I have now fully charged the pen, and will put it in a place where the tip isn't in contact with ANYTHING to test this claim/hypothesis.

However, with all due respect, I don't believe this is the cause at all. I simply believe there is an issue with permanently turning the pen of. It's not a matter of the "tip activating the pen". 

You or anyone else can easily make this conclusion with a simple test: If you bring your charged, supposedly inactivate, pen with the tip close to the screen; if it is truely not active until there is a pressure on the tip, why do the screen detect it and show the "Hoover cursor"?

I insist this is an issue with the pen, unless the pen is so advanced, it react to some magnetic force emitted by the screen, and now you tell me I need to store the pen in a faraday-cage-kind of compartment...

If the issue still persists, then I suggest you contact HP Support for a replacement since it could be a Hardware issue with the Pen
