I want to turn of the zoom in / out gesture on my touch pad. I still want to be able to use my touch pad

You can do this as follows.

 

Open windows Control Panel and in the top right, next to View by: select 'Large Icons'.  From the new layout, select the Synaptics entry.

 

Remove the checkmark from 'Pinch Zoom' ( see the example below ) – click apply and ok to save the changes.

Thanks @DavidPK that's brilliant.

I didn't have a synapatic control but I do have touch pad icon (elen touch pad) and it was quite straight forward from there to disavble the zooming gesture.
