pavilion dm3
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The DM3 has a touchpad with a separate button just above the pad. The machine is 6 years old and the Hard Drive failed recently and was replaced (with the OS of course, Win10.)

The button no longer works, the touch pad cannot be turned off making straight typing difficult. There is a status light left of the button that is orange when off, white when on.

The original OS was Win 7, upgraded to Win 10 a few years back. Is there any way to get proper driver so this functions or is there another way to control on/off not documented anywhere I've found.

Thanks for getting back to us. The PS/2 is for an external mouse and not for the touchpad. It will be re-installed automatically once you restart the computer.

Please try this driver download link

Greetings!

Welcome to the HP Support Community. This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries. I have reviewed your post and I understand there's an issue with the touchpad.

Appreciate you trying the steps. Don't worry, I'm here to help! To better assist you - What's the exact model name of the computer? Refer to this link for steps to find the product details. (Ensure not to share the serial number, email, phone number, etc.)

While you respond to that, let's try these steps -

1) Right click on the start or Windows icon and open the "Device Manager".
2) Expand the "Mice and other pointing devices".
3) Right click on the "Synaptics TouchPad".
4) Click on uninstall and restart the computer.

Also, try updating the computer -

Step 1 Windows Updates troubleshooter -

Click on this link to run Windows Updates troubleshooter.

Step 2 Windows Updates -

1) In the search box, type and open Windows Updates.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Step 3 HP Support Assistant Updates -

1) In the search box, type and open HP Support Assistant.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Hope this helps!

Let me know how that goes.

I tried what you suggested. No updates either HP or MS available.

My machine is an HP Pavilion DM3 notebook product # VM211UA#ABA.

In device manager under Mice & other pointing devices I only have one entry - PS/2 compatible mouse. Hence my problem.

I don't have an actual mouse connected, the touch-pad is functional, the extra option of ability to turn it off and on is what my problem is, that option isn't functioning.

Since I don't have a touch-pad device I didn't try to remove the mouse device that is present. Should I try to remove that device and re-boot? Would the boot process rebuild the touch-pad device properly? What I worry about is booting w/o any pointing device.
