I was also having intermittent issues with the touchpad/clickpad on my laptop (HP Spectre x360 - 13-ae030ca). It would randomly skip, stop working, only allow for right-click functions when it would work, etc. I performed driver and BIOS updates, as suggested, and it has appeared to have fixed the issue (two days and counting - so far, so good). However, now I have lost all gesture functionality with the touchpad (i.e. scroll, zoom in, zoom out, etc.). I have tried all the recommendations that I have found in the forum with no success - updated BIOS, followed the step-by-step instructions for troubleshooting, etc. Can someone please provide me with a solution? I am happy to have the cursor functionality back but I don't feel like I should have to sacrifice all gesture controls in order to get it... I have had this computer less than two years and I paid a fair amount for it - please advise as this is quite frustrating. Thank you in advance for any assistance and/or direction that you can provide.

@dmprouty I have a few steps to help resolve this issue once and for all,
Step 1: Go to Device Manager > Mice and other pointing devices. Right-click on the Synaptics option and go to Properties.
Step 2: Go to the Driver tab and note down the Driver Version (19.5.10.75 for my laptop).
Step 3: Click on Update Driver.
Step 4: Click on ‘Browse my computer for driver software.
Step 5: Click on ‘Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.’
Step 6: Now select a version less than the one that you noted above. In my case, it is 19.5.10.69 version. Click Next and you will be asked to restart the PC.
Once you log in again, open Control Panel and go to Mouse settings. The Synaptics tab will be happily sitting there. Click it to modify TouchPad/ClickPad settings and you can make the necessary changes.
If none of the methods mentioned above bring back the Synaptics tab, install Synaptics app from the Microsoft store. Once installed, launch it and you will be able to modify its settings.
P.S: Welcome to HP Community 😉

@Riddle_Decipher
Thank you for the detailed instructions regading my issue and I apologize for the delay in follow-up response. I was able to perform the first five of the six steps you suggested but Step 6 was unsuccesful. To recap, in Step 2 I notated the version of driver that I have (19.5.35.47) prior to moving forward. I completed the steps up to, and thru, Step 5 (i.e. "Click on 'Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer'") but this is where I ran into trouble. Step 6 states that I should "select a version..." but I am not given that option. I have included a screenshot of what I see instead of what you stated I should see... Am I doing something wrong?
Additionally, I took it a step further and, as per your suggestions in bold, I proceeded to attempt the installation of the Synaptics app since "none of the methods mentioned above" brought back the Synaptics tab. Your link took me directly to the app in the Microsoft Store but I received continual error messages when I attempted to download said app. I am very grateful for your assistance but, needless to say, I am still frustrated and confused and do not know where to go from here... I look forward to hearing back from you soon.
