Hello,

Recently, I noticed that the touchpad on my laptop suddenly stopped working. This has happened once or twice before, but a simple restart usually brought it back to normal. This time, however, that hasn’t helped.

I tried to recall anything that might have triggered the issue. The only thing I did differently was switch to tablet mode briefly to demonstrate it to someone. I’m wondering if that could’ve affected it.

Initially, I assumed the touchpad might have been disabled by a keyboard shortcut. But when I went into the settings, there was no separate touchpad menu—only mouse options were visible.

I searched online, and most suggestions pointed to updating the touchpad driver. However, when I opened Device Manager, I couldn’t even find any device listed for the touchpad.

At that point, I was still on Windows 10. I installed all available updates, but it didn’t help. I then upgraded to Windows 11, hoping that might fix the issue, but unfortunately, the problem persisted. As a final attempt, I performed a system restore, but the touchpad is still unresponsive.

I’d really appreciate any advice or suggestions to resolve this.

Thanks,
Kushagra

@Kushagra_18, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand how frustrating it can be when your touchpad suddenly stops working especially when it doesn’t even show up in Device Manager. Let’s walk through a few steps to help get it working again.

Check if the Touchpad is Disabled in BIOS

Sometimes, the touchpad can be disabled at the BIOS level, especially after switching modes like tablet mode.

  1. Restart your laptop and immediately press the Esc key repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
  2. Press F10 to enter BIOS Setup.
  3. Navigate to the Advanced or System Configuration tab (varies by model).
  4. Look for Internal Pointing Device or Touchpad and ensure it is Enabled.
  5. Press F10 to save and exit.

Perform a Hard Reset

This can help reinitialize hardware connections.

  1. Power off the laptop.
  2. Unplug the power adapter.
  3. If your laptop has a removable battery, remove it.
  4. Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  5. Reconnect the battery and power adapter, then power on the laptop.

Reinstall Touchpad Drivers Manually

If the touchpad is missing from Device Manager, try reinstalling the drivers:

  1. Go to the HP Software and Driver Downloads.
  2. Enter your laptop’s model number.
  3. Download the latest Touchpad or Synaptics/ELAN/Precision Touchpad driver available.
  4. Install the driver and restart your laptop.

If no touchpad driver is listed, try installing the Intel Serial IO driver or Chipset drivers, as these sometimes enable touchpad detection.

Use HP Hardware Diagnostics

HP provides a tool to test hardware components:

  1. Download and install HP PC Hardware Diagnostics for Windows.
  2. Open the app and run the Touchpad Test under Component Tests > Input Devices.

Clean Boot to Rule Out Conflicts

A clean boot can help identify if a third-party app is interfering.

  1. Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  2. Under the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all.
  3. Go to the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager.
  4. Disable all startup items.
  5. Restart your PC and check if the touchpad works.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
