@Dudsmom, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the touchpad issue!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It sounds like your HP Pavilion Laptop's touchpad is not responding properly to highlighting, cutting, copying, or pasting. Here are some troubleshooting steps to fix the issue:

Check Touchpad Settings

  1. Go to Settings: Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Navigate to Devices: Click on Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
  3. Enable Tap and Gestures: Ensure that gestures like Tap with two fingers to right-click and Tap to click are enabled.

Restart the Laptop

  • A simple restart can often resolve temporary glitches. Try restarting the laptop and check if the issue persists.

Update or Reinstall Touchpad Driver

  1. Open Device Manager: Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices.
  3. Right-click on the Touchpad Driver (e.g., HID-compliant touchpad or Synaptics/ELAN touchpad).
  4. Select Update Driver > Search automatically for drivers.
  5. If updating doesn’t work, uninstall the driver and restart the laptop. Windows should reinstall it automatically.

Check Windows Updates

  1. Go to Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Click Check for updates and install any pending updates.

Use External Mouse for Testing

  • Try connecting an external mouse to check if copy-paste functions work. If they do, the issue may be with the touchpad hardware.

Perform a System Restore

  • If the issue started recently, you can restore your system to a previous working state:
    1. Search for Create a restore point in the Windows search bar.
    2. Click System Restore and follow the prompts.

If none of these steps work, let me know, and we can try additional troubleshooting methods! 😊

Take care, and have an amazing day!
