@Dudsmom, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the touchpad issue!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
It sounds like your HP Pavilion Laptop's touchpad is not responding properly to highlighting, cutting, copying, or pasting. Here are some troubleshooting steps to fix the issue:
Check Touchpad Settings
- Go to Settings: Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Navigate to Devices: Click on Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
- Enable Tap and Gestures: Ensure that gestures like Tap with two fingers to right-click and Tap to click are enabled.
Restart the Laptop
- A simple restart can often resolve temporary glitches. Try restarting the laptop and check if the issue persists.
Update or Reinstall Touchpad Driver
- Open Device Manager: Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices.
- Right-click on the Touchpad Driver (e.g., HID-compliant touchpad or Synaptics/ELAN touchpad).
- Select Update Driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- If updating doesn’t work, uninstall the driver and restart the laptop. Windows should reinstall it automatically.
Check Windows Updates
- Go to Settings > Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates and install any pending updates.
Use External Mouse for Testing
- Try connecting an external mouse to check if copy-paste functions work. If they do, the issue may be with the touchpad hardware.
Perform a System Restore
- If the issue started recently, you can restore your system to a previous working state:
- Search for Create a restore point in the Windows search bar.
- Click System Restore and follow the prompts.
If none of these steps work, let me know, and we can try additional troubleshooting methods! 😊
Take care, and have an amazing day!
