Subject: I2C HID Device Code 10 - Touchpad completely dead, persists after driver/BIOS/chipset fixes

What I was experiencing:
My laptop's built-in touchpad stopped working completely. In Device Manager, under Human Interface Devices, the "I2C HID Device" shows a yellow warning triangle with this error:

"This device cannot start. (Code 10) A request for the HID descriptor failed. This typically occurs when there is a problem with the device firmware."

The ELAN touchpad entry and all ELAN Smart-Pad settings (in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad) have completely disappeared. The touchpad shows no response at all — no cursor movement, no clicks.

This is the 4th time this issue has occurred. The previous 3 times, it was resolved through driver reinstalls, but this time the error has persisted for 4 months despite extensive troubleshooting.

Steps I've already tried (none resolved it):

  1. Uninstalled the I2C HID Device and ELAN driver in Device Manager, then rescanned for hardware changes
  2. Downloaded and installed the official ELAN Precision Touchpad Filter Driver (v22.2.48.1 Rev.D) directly from HP's support site
  3. Confirmed BIOS is already on the latest version (F.38 Rev.A) — updated from F.34 Rev.A, no change
  4. Downloaded and installed the full AMD Chipset Driver package (AMD I2C Driver v1.2.0.131, plus MicroPEP, PSP, SMBus, GPIO, and Processor Power Management drivers) directly from AMD's site
  5. Restarted after every step above — Code 10 error persists unchanged throughout

Additional detail:
The touchpad DOES respond when tested through the BIOS hardware diagnostic test only. It does not work in normal BIOS navigation or anywhere in Windows.

Recent software/driver changes before this started:
Windows 11 was updated to version 25H2 in March 2026, followed by a "repair version" reinstall of 25H2 in April 2026. Windows Update also silently installed a generic "ELAN - Mouse" driver (v22.2.48.1) around the same time, separate from HP's official packaged driver.

System details:

  • HP laptop, AMD processor (Ryzen-based)
  • Windows 11, version 25H2
  • I2C HID Device location: "on AMD I2C Controller" per Device Manager, Manufacturer listed as Microsoft

Internet connection: Wifi

Hi @PratikChoudhary,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thank you for providing such detailed information and for documenting all the troubleshooting you have already completed.

Since the I2C HID device continues to show Code 10 (“A request for the HID descriptor failed”) after reinstalling the ELAN driver, updating the BIOS from F.34 to F.38, and installing the AMD chipset/I2C drivers, this does not appear to be a simple missing-driver issue.

The fact that the touchpad responds during the HP hardware diagnostic test is also useful information. Since the touchpad is detected and responds in the diagnostic environment, but the I2C HID device fails to initialize in Windows, the next step would be to isolate whether Windows 11 25H2 is causing the device initialization problem.

Please try the following:

1. Check the AMD I2C Controller

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Expand System devices.
  • Locate the AMD I2C Controller.
  • Check whether it has any yellow warning icon.
  • Open Properties > General and let us know the device status/error code.

2. Check Windows Update driver history

  • Since you mentioned that Windows installed an ELAN mouse driver (22.2.48.1) around the time the issue started:
  • Go to Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Driver updates.
  • Check whether the ELAN driver is listed there.
  • If Roll Back Driver is available for the affected device under Device Manager > Properties > Driver, you can try the rollback and restart the notebook.

3. Check for an optional Windows driver

  • Go to: Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates
  • Check whether Windows is offering an ELAN, AMD I2C, or other touchpad-related driver.
  • Please note the version before installing anything.

At this stage, I would not recommend reinstalling the same ELAN or AMD chipset packages again, since you have already completed those steps without any change.

If the AMD I2C controller is working normally and the I2C HID code 10 remains after the Windows-side checks, the issue may require further investigation at the system level rather than another driver reinstall.

Since this has already persisted for four months and the touchpad has previously experienced the same failure multiple times, if the above checks do not resolve it, I recommend contacting HP Support or an HP-authorized service center for further diagnosis.

Could you also provide the exact HP laptop model/product number? That will allow us to determine the appropriate platform drivers and whether there are any model-specific touchpad/I2C troubleshooting options.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day ahead! 🚀

Best regards,
