Greetings to the Hp Community,

It is with incredible frustration that I come to ask you this question. For a year now, my touchpad has not been working. It does not even register clicks. I have done all the recommended resolutions I could find on the internet. Be it in this forum, on YouTube or Reddit, all equally unsuccessful.

Allow me to give some details: I have an Hp pavillon 360 and for the first year, everything worked fine. Then the touchpad will crash occasionally, but a restart will get everything going for a few weeks, then a few days, then a few hours, then nothing. Making some updates will fix it for a few days, until nothing happened. I have downloaded older and current drivers from Hp and either they are not compatible with my device, or they do not change a single thing. I bought the laptop because it was slim, but I have to carry an external mouse around all the time.

I have even updated my BIOS and done the tests there, and my pointer works fine. Maybe the hardware is the problem? The I2C HID device driver always fails immediately before my mouse stop and it is the only driver I have ever had issues with. In windows 11 versions before 24H22 I also had an I2C HID device for the touchscreen(it is labeled differently in recent updates) and that worked fine.

I cannot tell if the hardware is faulty, or if it is indeed a software issue. Maybe one of you will have a solution that will solve this. Thank you for your support.

TLDR: Touchpad not working, I2C HID device driver responsible for the touchpad has failed and keeps failing for months after driver and windows updates, older drivers do not solve the issue, BIOS tests reveal nothing, BIOS update did nothing, do not know if it is the hardware.

Test the Touchpad in BIOS:

Since you've already done BIOS tests, ensure that the touchpad is not disabled in the BIOS:

  • Reboot your laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing Esc or F10 during startup).
  • Check the Device Configuration section and ensure the touchpad is enabled.
  • If the touchpad works in BIOS, it’s likely a software issue; if not, it could be a hardware problem.

Reset Windows or Perform a System Restore:

If nothing else works, you can try a System Restore (if a restore point is available from when the touchpad worked) or a Reset Windows:

  • System Restore: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Open System Restore.
  • Reset Windows: If you prefer a fresh start, go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Reset this PC.

Hardware Diagnostic Test:

If you're still unsure if the issue is hardware-related, you can run a more thorough hardware diagnostic from HP:

  • Visit the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics page and run the full diagnostic to test if the touchpad hardware is malfunctioning.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi @I2CHIDisapain,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're facing an ongoing issue with the I2C HID device on your HP Pavilion x360 14 Touchpad, and troubleshooting hasn't resolved it so far. Here are a few steps you can try to narrow down the cause and possibly fix the issue.

Uninstall and Reinstall the Touchpad Driver:

Sometimes, drivers can become corrupted or incompatible after updates. Try uninstalling the touchpad driver completely and reinstalling it:

  • Uninstall the Touchpad Driver:
    • Open Device Manager (Windows + X > Device Manager).
    • Find Mice and other pointing devices.
    • Right-click the touchpad device (likely listed as "I2C HID Device" or similar).
    • Select Uninstall Device and check the option to delete the driver.
    • Restart your PC.
  • Reinstall the Driver:
    • After rebooting, Windows should attempt to reinstall the driver automatically.
    • If it doesn't, download the latest drivers from the HP support website specific to your model.

Manually Update I2C HID Driver:

Since you've had issues with driver versions, try updating or rolling back the I2C HID driver manually:

  • Update the Driver:
    • In Device Manager, right-click the I2C HID Device under Human Interface Devices and choose Update Driver.
    • Select Search automatically for updated driver software.
  • Roll Back the Driver:
    • If the update doesn't work, try rolling back the driver:
    • Right-click the I2C HID Device > Properties > Driver tab > Roll Back Driver.

Disable Power Saving for I2C HID Device:

Windows might be turning off the touchpad to save power. Try disabling power management:

  • In Device Manager, right-click the I2C HID Device.
  • Select Properties, go to the Power Management tab.
  • Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
  • Restart your laptop to check if the touchpad works.

Check Windows Update Settings:

You mentioned updates, and sometimes Windows updates can cause issues. Ensure that your Windows 11 installation is fully up-to-date:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  • Check for updates and install any available updates.
