For the last few hours my touchpad has stopped working. Once in a while, a restart will have it working, but within minutes, it randomly freezes again. I've had to use a mouse, but once even that froze.

 

I've updated the drivers, done all the updates, checked the bios, hard restarted the computer, changed touchpad and mouse settings, checked for hardware issues. EVERYTHING. What's going on with this touchpad?!

 

I don't know if it helps, but it all started when I clicked a menu in Unity. As soon as I clicked, the cursor was frozen and the touchpad did not work.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Did this happen after a recent window or software update?
  • Have you made any hardware/software changes?

While you respond to that, let's try these steps: 

Hard Reset: Follow steps from the link: https://hp.care/2GnkMa8. (do not skip any troubleshooting steps even if you feel steps are repeating)

BIOS default: 

  1. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
  2. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
  3. On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
  4. Press F10 to Save and Exit.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
  6. Follow the prompts to restart your computer.

I've done both of these things before, and i've done them again. The restart of the computer always get the touchpad working at first, but within a few minutes, it eventually freezes again.

 

Previously, I've tried disabling and reenabling some devices, and consistently, the I2C HID device gives an error code 10 saying the device cannot start. I've also tried uninstalling this device and restarting the computer. I'm not sure if this does anything though as I said restarting already results in the touchpad working for a few minutes.

Thank you for posting back. 

 

Next, uninstall Touchpad device from device manager.

  1. Press Windows+X to open the menu, and choose Device Manager on it. 
  2. In the device manager, expand category "Mice and other pointing devices". 
  3. Under this category, right-click on your Synaptics Touchpad driver and click on Uninstall. 
  4. You may be required to confirm the uninstallation. Check the box next to "Delete the driver software for this device" and click OK button. 
  5. Restart your PC for the change to take effect. After restarting. Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver. 
  6. Do not perform any manual upgrades to the driver until it does automatically.

Thank you for the tips, but unfortunately, this did not work either. Once again, the touchpad worked for a while but eventually stopped again. I actually managed to keep it working for more than a day by only using soft touches on the trackpad instead of any hard clicks (which seems to stop the functionality much sooner)

Thank you for posting back.

 

I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue. I would suggest performing system factory reset will put the computer back to the original factory settings in this way all corrupted and outdated software will be removed. 

 

While doing the recovery there is an option to backup your personal files. If you have not previously done one now is a good time. 


Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows )You can also contact HP support for assistance. They can remotely access your system to help alleviate difficulties: www.hp.com/contacthp/

 

The HP Cloud Recovery Tool allows you to download recovery software to a USB drive. You can use the downloaded recovery image file in order to install the Windows operating system.
