Hi,

I have a brand new HP Omnibook 5 16 inch Laptop Next Gen AI PC-16-ag1000 AW5U5AV with WIndows 11. The touchpad below the keyboard wont let me click and highlight any text on the screen.  It also wont let me click and drag scollbars up and down. I did a hardware check with HP PC Hardware Diagnostics test and it came up with a FAIL for the Mouse/Touchpad drag and drop test.

I dont understand how this can happen with a brand new laptop. Can someone tell me what the problem is? I have all the new updates/drivers installed and it should be working.

Thanks so much for the help

Kind Regards,

Hi @kjoy2241.,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Omnibook 5 touchpad failing drag-and-drop and not allowing click-and-hold actions. Let’s go through a few checks.

Check Touchpad Click Behavior Settings

  1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
  2. Ensure “Touchpad” is turned ON.
  3. Check “Taps” section.
  4. Enable “Tap with a single finger to single-click.”
  5. Enable “Tap twice and drag to multi-select.”

Adjust Touchpad Sensitivity and Gestures

  1. In Touchpad settings, set sensitivity to “High.”
  2. Scroll down to “Gestures & interaction.”
  3. Ensure drag gestures are enabled.
  4. Disable any custom gesture overrides.
  5. Test click-and-drag again.

Reinstall Touchpad Driver

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand “Human Interface Devices” or “Mice and other pointing devices.”
  3. Right-click the touchpad device (HID-compliant or Synaptics/ELAN).
  4. Select Uninstall device.
  5. Restart the laptop to reinstall.

Update BIOS and Chipset (Important)

  1. Go to HP Support website for your exact model.
  2. Download and install latest BIOS.
  3. Install chipset drivers as well.
  4. Restart after installation.
  5. Test touchpad again.

Check Physical Click vs Tap Test

  1. Try pressing down (physical click) and dragging.
  2. Then try double-tap and drag.
  3. Compare both behaviors.
  4. If both fail, continue to next step.
  5. Note if cursor movement itself is normal.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day ahead! 🚀

Best regards,
