I am having a serious hardware issue with my HP laptop's touchpad. At first, it just missed some touches, but it would start working again after a restart. Over the next few weeks, it got worse, requiring two or three restarts just to turn on. Now, the touchpad is completely dead and does not respond at all.

I have already tried updating the drivers and performing a hard reset, but nothing has changed. I have never spilled food or water on the laptop, so I believe the problem is internal. Please let me know how to fix this hardware failure

Hi @Hu123

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing the detailed history of the issue. Based on your description, the touchpad has gradually failed, which points to a deeper hardware-level concern.

Since you have already updated drivers and performed a hard reset, let’s move through a structured set of steps to isolate the problem further:

Step 1: Verify Touchpad Settings in BIOS

  • Restart the computer and immediately press the F10 key repeatedly to enter BIOS Setup.
  • In BIOS, navigate to Advanced or Device Configuration.
  • Ensure the Internal Pointing Device or Touchpad option is enabled.
  • Save changes and restart.

Step 2: Check Device Manager

  • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  • Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
  • If the touchpad is listed, right-click and select Uninstall device.
  • Restart the computer; Windows should automatically reinstall the driver.

Step 3: Run Hardware Diagnostics

  • Turn off the computer.
  • Power it on and immediately press the Esc key repeatedly.
  • From the Startup Menu, press F2 to open System Diagnostics.
  • Run the Component Test for the touchpad to check hardware functionality.

Step 4: Confirm with External Input

  • Connect a USB mouse and verify normal operation.
  • This helps confirm whether the issue is isolated to the touchpad hardware.

Step 5: Update via HP App

  • Open the HP App on your computer.
  • Go to Updates and install any available system or firmware updates.
  • Restart after updates are applied.

Summary:
You have already tried driver updates and hard reset. The next steps are to confirm BIOS settings, reinstall via Device Manager, run diagnostics, and apply updates through the HP App. If the diagnostics report a failure, it confirms the touchpad hardware is not responding internally.

If you have tried all possible solutions and the issue still isn’t resolved, it may be a hardware problem. In that case, it’s best to visit a service center.
