@Joe-L-73, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If the touchpad on your HP Notebook 14-dq1043cl running Windows 11 doesn’t stay disabled when using a Bluetooth mouse, it may be due to Windows or HP settings automatically re-enabling it. Here’s how to properly disable the touchpad only when a mouse is connected — or permanently if you prefer:

Option 1: Use Windows Settings (Auto-disable touchpad when mouse is connected)

  1. Go to Settings → press Windows + I.
  2. Navigate to Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
  3. Scroll down and click Additional settings (opens Mouse Properties).
  4. In the new window, go to the Device Settings or Touchpad tab (this name may vary depending on your driver).
  5. Look for a checkbox like:
“Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached
“Disable touchpad when mouse is connected
  6. Check the box and click Apply > OK.

If this option is missing, your touchpad driver may not support it or is outdated.

Option 2: Permanently Disable the Touchpad via Device Manager

If you always use a mouse:

  1. Press Windows + X > choose Device Manager.
  2. Expand Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices.
  3. Right-click the touchpad (often listed as Synaptics, ELAN, or HID-compliant touchpad).
  4. Click Disable device (not uninstall).
  5. Confirm.

Option 3: Update or Reinstall Touchpad Drivers

  1. Go to HP official support page for your model: Official HP® Drivers and Software Download | HP® Support
  2. Download and install the latest Synaptics or ELAN Touchpad driver (Windows Precision drivers if available).
  3. Restart and repeat Option 1 to check if the setting now appears.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
