HP X2 10
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi!

i wanted to connect my HP X2 10 detachable to other HDMI devices with an USB C to HDMI cable, but no device is regognised in any way. i have to admit that i am very confused with that topic, but i guess i am not the only one.

I am not using any docking station or adapter, just the cable.
my notebook's USB C has the thunderbolt symbol.
The cable i am using is for DP-ALT-Mode.

help is really appreciated.
i am very confused withthis topic.

THX

@malte1 Here's what you need to know:

USB Type-C video modes (Alternate mode): USB Type-C ports support adapters that can output different types of video such as HDMI, VGA, and DisplayPort, all from one USB Type-C port on your computer or device.

For more information about USB Type-C, see http://www.usb.org/developers/usbtypec/ (in English).

For specific details about USB Type-C capabilities, see the QuickSpecs for your business PC, workstation, detachable, convertible, phone, or tablet at QuickSpecs webpage.

For Pavilion x2, x360, Spectre, ENVY, and OMEN series computers, see the product specifications for your model, below:

Thanx for your help.

i already dug a little deeper into this topic, and it seems to me that a USB C type connector wich runs on 3.0 will only support video output with an external adapter.
USB 3.1 on the other hand does support video output natively so no adapter is needed. a cable will do.
still might be wrong on that.

i will try an adapter.

@malte1 Alright, please take your time, do try the adapter and get back to us with the results.

Take care and good luck!

No luck

i bought the amazon Basics USB 3.1 Type C HDMI adapter and tried it with my samsung TV and my video goggles (these are important). i know its 3.1 but it should be downwards compatible to the X2 10's USB 3.0 C type port.

Win 10 doesnt detect anything even though i tried different hdmi cables and Mini HDMI adapters wich i need for the goggles.
i also tried to update the USB 3.0 drivers, but win10 says they are up-to-date (could this be an issue?)
+ i looked in the BIOS but no settings to use there...

now i bought a new 2.0a HDMI > mini HDMI cable + a different USB C > HDMI adapter/converter.

Spoiler
as a HP support agent, can you tell me what i need to buy to get a video out through my X2's USB C-type port (has the thunderbolt symbol)?

@malte1 There are two reasons this may not be working either, your device just supports type C to display port. So you need a adapter with DP ALT mode. Simply search this on Amazon you will find something help. Before you buy it, you can ask the dealer for details. Goodluck! or there's an issue with the USB port, I suggest you perform a hardware test to identify/confirm the issue:

Install the latest version of the HP Hardware diagnostics (UEFI) on your device using this link: Click here for details

  • Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
  • Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
  • On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click component Tests.
  • Click USB Test.
  • Click Run once, or Loop until error.
  • While the test is running, the time remaining and test result for each component display on the screen.

If a component fails a test, write down the failure ID (24-digit code) for when you respond back to us.

If you wish to thank me for my efforts, you could click on "Accept as solution" on my post as the solution should help others too.
