I am trying to get video to display on an external monitor from the USB-C port on my notebook. I am connecting via a generic USB-C hub to an HDMI input on my monitor. No luck 😞
Confirmed that hub does work by plugging into android phone with USB-C. Video immediately appears on monitor. All other peripherials work via hub.
From notebook specs: "1 USB 3.1 Type-C™ Gen 1 (Data Transfer up to 5 Gb/s, DP1.4, HP Sleep and Charge); 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1 (1 HP Sleep and Charge); 1 HDMI v2.0b; 1 headphone/microphone combo"
Fixes tried:
Various HDMI cables (current gen)
Various USB-C cables (current gen)
Various monitor inputs
Update all drivers both via Windows update and through HP support website
Update BIOS
Checked for area within BIOS to enable DP1.4 (couldn't find anything)
Disable HUB drivers then reenable (after various actions- restart, hard restart, both with and without hub attached)
Uninstall HUB drivers then allow automatic reinstall (after various actions- restart, hard restart, both with and without hub attached)
Fiddled with every Windows and AMD display setting I could find 🙂
Did support chat with HP and after 30-45 minutes was told I needed to call HP Smart Friend service and pay a fee for additional support. Called Smart Friend and asked why a fee for new notebook support and was told becasue it was a "software issue." I asked how they knew and they couldn't say. Did not continue.
Hub seems to be recognized when attached under "Devices and Printers" Both USB 2.0 Billboard and USB 3.0 Hub appear and are illuminated.
Only sign that something is not working [other than video not working 😉 ] is the following under the "Events" tab from the device manager:
Device USB\VID_2109&PID_0210\6&1956eb22&1&5 was not migrated due to partial or ambiguous match.

Can anyone help me please? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hi,
Have you tried directly using USB-C to HDMI adapter ? It has HDMI v2.0 port, why you have to do that hard way it costs you USB-C ? Does your monitor have DP ? to get better option please USB-C to DP adapter.
Regards.

Thanks for the questions/suggestions.
I do not have a display port on my monitor, so HDMI is the best options. I switch often from a notebook to desktop environment. Desktop has dual monitors and numerous peripherials. Old Dell docking station handled these well. Just a simple drop into the dock for everything in the desktop environment to be ready to go.
Old Dell computer wasn't keeping up with the times, so I needed a new notebook with the ability to be docked. This HP should fit the bill by using a usb-c dock, but so far no luck on the video out.

Hi,
Vendors (Dell, HP, Lenovo ...) used to have proper docking stations, specially for business notebooks/laptops but now they are moving to new cheaper (specially from notebook docking ports) ways and they call old docks as old fashion tools.
At work, I prefer to use old style docks. Unfortunately, when new player came in with new brand of comupters (including desktops), the contract ending up with thousands of USB "docks"(because they are cheaper) for notebooks and I hate them because we have to use two AC adapters.
From my view: More works need to be done for USB USB-C docks.
Regards.

I don't know if you problem have been solved. The prpoblem is HP envy just support type C to display port. So you need a adapter with DP ALT mode. Simply search this on Amazon you will find something help. Before you buy it, you can ask the dealer for details. Goodluck!

Hi, I think we have a same problem and i have resolve it on my 13-ad024tu since i have tried every method to get a video output from usb-C port. In fact Envy series surppoted a not-so-popular style of video transport since they used displayport altative mode, which means you need to use a usb-c to dispalyport cable or adaptor. Yet as i know there are few monitor use this port compare to vga and hdmi, so you need to buy a adaptor with display altative mode. this wil use dispalyport to get video from type-c and output transfer to hdmi or vga, while it will lost some solution, especillay using hdmi monitor.
I have bought one external graphic chip adaptor from HP, which cost me over 100 dollars, but it still have a problem in some situation. After i lost it i have got another one with dispalylink chip, yet still not so good because this kind of external graphic chips will have alot of problem in some situation, though they support multiple monitor at one time. So i keep search on this topic and found even HP's Support Agent can't explain it clearly, which i think impossible. Anyway, i got a adapter which work great now, and in a quite fair cost. So if you still want a better way other than external graphic chip adaptor, just try this product or something like this one, with DP ALT MODE as the keyword.

Hope it will help. i just update my reply since i have just got my new adaptor and it works great.

You are absolutely correct. Getting and adapter that supports dp alt mode worked like a charm.
It is unbelievable that the two HP support techs I spoke to for over an hour couldn't tell me this and insisted it was a software problem so I needed to call HP Smart Friend and pay for support.
Thumbs down to HP Support, but big Thumbs up to the forum!
