HP ENVY 17.3 inch Laptop PC 17-ch0000 (23T01AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello,

I have an issue with a 4 port USB 3.0 KVM switch - 4 port input & 4 port output.

I'm sharing 3 devices; a HP EliteBook, a HP ProDesk and the machine is question, a HP Envy (17" i7), so only 3 ports are being used.

When I use the EliteBook and the ProDesk devices I don't experience any issues, but when I try to use my new HP Envy, every 10 or so seconds, the mouse pointer freezes for a few seconds; likewise the keyboard misses inputs, so as you can imagine, it's quite frustrating.

I've updated all the drivers and BIOS to the current versions and also applied all the current updates. I've tried using different USB ports on the HP Envy laptop, likewise I've tried different ports on the KVM switch.

The new HP Envy i7 has replaced a 7 year old HP Envy 17" (yes 7 years old!) - the old i7 laptop running Windows 10 worked perfectly through the same KVM, so why does this new HP Envy running Windows 11 experience mouse & keyboard freezing?

I only started experiencing issues when I connected this new HP Envy i7 17" laptop running under Windows 11 - that's all I can put it down to...

I've even tried different wireless & wired mice along with other keyboards and all exhibit the same issues; mouse pointer freezing/suttering and keyboard freezing so characters miss or a character repeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeets without pressing it!

As I say, 3 other HP laptops and desktops don't have this issue but they are all running Windows 10 except the new laptop!

Any clues as to what could be causing this would be much appreciated.

Hi,

Many thanks for your response.

I had already tried all of your suggestions except the reset option; it was a little drastic, so I wanted to be sure if there were any less drastic options available to me before the reset.

So, after the reset and the 2 days (on and off), of re-installing all my software and getting my dev environment set up and restored, the reset options seems to have fixed it!

Cheers!

Hi@daz_racing,

Welcome to the HP Support Community! I'd like to help!

I see you are experiencing issues with the HP ENVY Laptop PC USB KVM Switch and Mouse Keyboard freezing.

I have a few recommendations

  • Update your Notebook computer to the latest BIOS from HP.COM.
  • Make sure the Windows and HP support assistant updates are up to date.
  • Try doing Reset PC Keep my files from windows and check if it works.
  • Check with any other USB devices on this HP Envy ports.
  • Try and check with any one of the USB devices at a time on all USB ports.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi,

I think I may have been too hasty to say my issue was fixed.

I started the new HP Envy today and the mouse lag is still there!

There haven't been any Windows updates applied between when I thought it was fixed and now. The keyboard lag issue has gone away however.

I have no idea what else I can check - it works fine with an my works EliteBook and 8th gen ProDesk that has just this week been upgraded to Windows 11.

I do have a Startech dock plugged into the KVM switch but that was there previously - the only thing that has changed in this whole set up is that I swapped the 7 year old 17" HP Envy 4th Gen i7 laptop (running Windows 10) with the brand new 17" Hp Envy i7 (running Windows 11) and now I have the mouse pointer lag.

In desperation, I installed the Startech displayport driver package in the hope it was a screen related lag - that made no difference to the mouse pointer lag.

I thought it was Windows 11 causing the issue, but the HP Prodesk now running Windows 11 works perfectly - no mouse pointer lag.

If I plug the usb mouse receiver directly into the new HP Envy, then it works perfectly, but obviously, I want to share the mouse between machines.

Any ideas other than those I've already tried?

Is there any way to find the port that the mouse is plugged into and monitor it in a way that could point towards the cause?

Thanks...
