I am trying to extend my laptop to two monitors using HDMI. Since the laptop only has one HDMI port, I looked up different adapters and saw there is a USB-C to 2 HDMI adapter that extends to 2 monitors (not mirror, which I don't want). The reviews on the adapter that I purchased were all positive, the only negative was people were saying it didn't work for MacOS. But for whatever reason, it is not working for me. With the one HDMI directly into the laptop, I am able to extend to one monitor fine. When I remove it out of the laptop, and plug into the new adapter, the monitor stays black. Even when I open the laptop screen, nothing. There is a regular USB port on the adapter that I tested out by plugging in my keyboard, and that worked fine. It's just the HDMI that isn't working. Does anyone know why this adapter won't work, and if they have any other options where I can extend to two monitors? The two USB-A ports are currently using my mouse and keyboard. The adapter I purchased is here: link[edited]

Hi @Patrick_McC8,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
I’m sorry you’re going through this; I understand the concern and don’t worry I’ll help you with this.
To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?
The exact model of your laptop (some USB‑C ports only support data transfer, not video output).
Whether the adapter is advertised as DisplayPort Alt Mode or USB‑C MST (Multi‑Stream Transport) capable that’s what allows multiple extended displays.
If you’ve tested both monitors individually with the adapter (to confirm it’s not just one faulty port).
Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:
- Check USB‑C port capability: Not all USB‑C ports support video output. On many laptops, only ports with a small DisplayPort (DP) or Thunderbolt icon next to them can drive external monitors. If your USB‑C port is data‑only, HDMI adapters won’t work.
- Test one monitor at a time: Connect just one HDMI cable to the adapter and see if that monitor works. If neither does, the adapter may not be negotiating video correctly.
- Update graphics drivers: Go to your laptop manufacturer’s support page and install the latest Intel/AMD/NVIDIA graphics drivers. Outdated drivers can prevent multiple displays from being detected.
- Windows display settings: Right‑click the desktop → Display settings → Detect. Sometimes Windows doesn’t automatically recognize new monitors.
I hope this helps

Yes I found out my model HP Laptop 15-dy2xxx it appears the usb C is only data transfer when I read the manual. I am stuck having to just use the HDMI port so I don’t think there is any way that I can connect it to two monitors, only one. Or do you know of a way? I also just purchased an LG monitor 34SR60QC-W and seems like it will only work if the laptop screen is opened. Is there a way to fix that?

Hi @Patrick_McC8,
Thanks for your response.
With your current HP 15-dy2xxx, you’re limited to one true external monitor via HDMI.
To use two external monitors, you would need:
A DisplayLink USB adapter or docking station, or
A laptop with a USB-C / Thunderbolt port that supports video output.
