I'm unable to change brightness on my laptop, I've tried literally everything, the slider doesn't work in the task bar nor the settings app, i used a command in command prompt and didn't work, i used AMD adrenaline software to adjust it and that didn't work either, my drivers are all up to date and have been double checked through device manager which says i have the latest drivers, auto brightness is also turned off as well as HDR settings, battery saving is also off, its been stuck at max brightness for almost a year and i didn't mind at first but its really starting to hurt my eyes. i can move the slider up and down but the brightness is always stuck at max.

Hi @Meilun

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Here are some precise steps you can follow to troubleshoot the brightness issue on your Windows laptop:

Check Display Adapter Settings

  • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  • Expand Display adapters.
  • Right-click your graphics driver (AMD in your case) and select Disable device.
  • Wait a few seconds, then right-click again and select Enable device.
  • Test the brightness slider after re-enabling.

Update the Monitor Driver

  • In Device Manager, expand Monitors.
  • Right-click Generic PnP Monitor and select Update driver.
  • Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  • If already updated, try Uninstall device, then restart your laptop. Windows will reinstall it automatically.

Check Power Options

  • Press Windows + R, type powercfg.cpl, and press Enter.
  • Select your active power plan and click Change plan settings.
  • Click Change advanced power settings.
  • Expand DisplayEnable adaptive brightness.
  • Ensure both On battery and Plugged in are set to Off.
  • Apply changes and test brightness control.

Run System Diagnostics

  • Press Windows + S and type HP App.
  • Open the app and go to Troubleshooting.
  • Run Display diagnostics to check for hardware or driver issues.

Check Windows Mobility Center

  • Press Windows + X and select Mobility Center.
  • Look for the brightness slider there and test if it responds.

Perform a Clean Boot

  • Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  • Under the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all.
  • Go to the Startup tab and open Task Manager.
  • Disable all startup items.
  • Restart your laptop and test brightness. If it works, re-enable services one by one to identify the conflict.

If the brightness remains locked after these steps, it points to a deeper driver or hardware-level issue. Since you’ve already confirmed drivers are up to date, the monitor driver reset and diagnostics are the most critical steps to try next.
