Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Windows 10 update, January 2020, the Synaptics mouse/touchpad options are gone and replaced by Windows default options. When I try to install older drivers, it tells me I have to first uninstall the Synaptics drivers through Add/Remove programs, but the the drivers are not found there. I deleted the drivers through device manager and rebooted, but still not working and still not allowing install of older drivers.

The main thing I want is to disable tap-to-click, which Windows options will not allow.

I suggest you download and run the HP Support Assistant from this Link: https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html?jumpid=va_r602_us/en/any/psg/p...

HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your Notebook

  1. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.

Click Updates in the My notebook pane

  2. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.

Updates list in HP Support Center

  3. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.

  4. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.

  5. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Also ensure Windows is up to date.

Select the Start  button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update , and select Check for updates. If Windows Update says your device is up to date, you have all the updates that are currently available

Keep me posted how it goes

I did both before I posted my original question. No dice. Did not resolve the issue.

@Obstmann

Please try editing the Registry settings and check if that helps

Click Start type Regedit

Navigate to the following location:  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTP\Install

Locate the following registry key: DeleteUserSettingsOnUpgrade

Right-click on the entry and click “Modify”.

Change the value from 1 to 0.

Keep me posted

Did not resolve the issue. There still is no option to disable the touchpad. The synaptics menu is gone and is replaced with Windows default, which has not option to disable touchpad.

Try creating a New User Account and check if you are able to disable the Touchpad in the new Account

Thanks for this. As I was looking for the older driver to install, I discovered there was a security vulnerability with it.

I'm guessing this is why it was replaced on update. I decided not to try to install it. I will wait for a safer update that will hopefully allow disabling tap-to-click.
