I'm presuming that you are using this external monitor to add a display for your laptop, right?

If you have mirroring set in the display settings, the monitor resolution has to match the laptop screen resolution.  So, you either have to go into the monitor menu to change the settings, or you have to go into Display Settings on your laptop and change Mirror to Extend.  With this second setting, the external monitor can have a different resolution than the laptop screen.
