My HP Notebook is now very laggy, it's so laggy to a point that it's unusable, the laptop is on 4 months old. I've tried everything I can. I even followed every step that the virtual agent gave me. I also did a factory reset. It's no good. It's really laggy.

@JackLander,

Thank you for showing your interest in HP Support Forums. It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel. I see from your post you are having issues with your HP notebook as it's lagging. Don't worry we'll work together to help you find a solution.

Splendid effort and fabulous description of the issue before posting. Kudos to you on that score.  You are a valued HP customer and it is paramount to assist you here. I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Have you recently made any software or hardware changes on the PC before the issue started?

Did it happen after a recent software update or Windows update?

Have you tried to run an extensive test on the System from F2?

Have you ensured all the drivers are updated either using Windows update or using HP Support Assistant.

As you have mentioned in your post that you have already tried to perform a factory reset on your PC. In this scenario, I would suggest you try to check if there is any update available for your PC.

Let's start off by performing a Hard Reset -

1) Shutdown the computer.
2) Unplug all the Adapter and peripherals connected.
3) Press and hold down the power button for 15 to 20 seconds.
4) Plug-in the Adapter.
5) Try to turn on the computer.

Next thing, I would suggest here is to Run Windows Updates troubleshooter -

Download and install the troubleshooter from this link.

Now try to perform Windows Updates -

1) In the search box, type and open Windows Updates.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

If the issue still persists, I would suggest here is to update the Bios on your computer from  HP Support Assistant Updates -

1) In the search box, type and open HP Support Assistant.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

1.    Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
2.    Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
3.    On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
4.    Press F10 to Save and Exit.
5.    Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
6.    Follow the prompts to restart your computer.

Also, I would suggest you enable Fast Start-Up on the system and check if it helps. To do this, follow the steps below.
1. Open Control Panel and go to Power Options.
2. Click/tap on the Choose what the power buttons do link on the left side.
3. Click/tap on the Change settings that are currently unavailable link at the top.
4. If prompted by UAC, then click/tap on Yes.
5. Ensure that Turn on Fast Startup is checked.
6. Restart the computer.

If the issue still persists after trying out the steps try the steps recommended below.

In Windows, search for Command Prompt. In the search results, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Then click Yes.
In Command Prompt, type sfc /scannow. Make sure to include the space between sfc and the /.
Press Enter and wait while System File Checker scans for corrupted files.
When scanning is complete, the results are displayed on the screen.
If the file checker found and replaced any corrupted files, restart the computer and check the performance.
If the file checker did not find any corrupted files or found corrupted files but could not replace them, go to the next step.
If System File Checker finds corrupted files but cannot replace them, use the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool. DISM checks the corrupted files; then downloads and replaces the files using Windows Update.
In Windows, open a web browser.
   NOTE:
You need to be connected to the Internet to use DISM.
In Windows, search for Command Prompt. In the search results, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Then click Yes.
In Command Prompt, type dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth. Make sure to include the space before each / in the command line.
Press Enter and wait while DISM works. This might take several minutes.
If DISM finds corrupted files, it replaces them using Windows Update. If this occurs, after DISM is finished, restart your computer and see if the performance has improved.

Hello, Jeep, thank you for taking time to type that, so when you tell me to perform a hardware reset, what adapter do you mean?

HP Recommended

@JackLander,

Thank you for replying,

I understand you need information regarding what does adapter mean while doing a hard reset on the notebook.

Adapter is nothing but the power cord with the brick. For more details on how to do a hard reset(Power reset) on the notebook, click here

Please try to follow the steps suggested in the previous post and get back to us with the results of the troubleshooting as this will help me in further assisting you.

What does a hard reset do?

HP Recommended

@JackLander,

Thank you for replying,

I understand you would like to know what does hard reset mean? It's nothing but removing electrostatic charges which are present on the computer.

For in detailed information: A power reset (or hard restart) clears all information from the computer's memory without erasing any personal data. Performing a power reset might fix conditions such as Windows not responding, a blank display, software freezing, keyboard stops responding, or other external devices locking up.

I hope this answers your question. Let me know if you need any further assistance.

Take care now and do have a fabulous week ahead. 🙂

Hi, I did as you said, but how did know that it worked? I'm talking about the hard reset.

I did everything I could, it's still really laggy. Nothing fixed the problem.

@JackLander,

It's great to have you back and your patience is greatly appreciated.

I understand you have tried to follow the steps suggested from the previous post and unfortunately nothing has helped to resolve this issue.

In this scenario, I would suggest you run an extensive system test as well as extensive test on the hard drive from F2(please capture the failure ID for further assistance).

Keep me posted,

If the information I've provided was helpful,

give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck.
